The story of a 7-year-old girl from Alabama selling lemonade to help to pay for her own brain surgery has caused an uproar on the internet, with many calling it an indictment of the U.S. healthcare system.

Liza Scott is the 7-year-old at the centre of the tragedy. Her family discovered she had multiple cerebral malformations after she suffered a seizure at the end of January.“She’s super special. She’s always been a fun and energetic, artistic, creative little girl, so this has been a big change.”

Liza will be undergoing brain surgery in Boston next week -- the first of many operations -- but receiving this life-saving care comes with a steep price tag, potentially costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. “Next Monday is kind of a ‘wait and see.’” Scott said of the upcoming surgery. “We don’t really know what to expect. Of course they won’t know until they get in there.”

Liza made headlines earlier this week when news outlets reported that she was setting up a lemonade stand inside her family’s business, selling lemonade for 25 cents, hoping to earn a little extra to go towards the cost of her surgeries."The American pay-to-live healthcare system is inhumane,"

What gets me about this is, 7 year old needs to raise money for health care, but movie stars, professional athletes and others could pay for this in a blink of an eye.

A shoutout to all millionaires and billionaires; here is something of great value that you can use your wealth for.

Pray for this family. Help if you can. 🙏

This is so sad :( something that is life-threatening for this child yet a Dr will do work on a woman that put glue in her hair for free... So sad. Wishing you the best and I hope someone comes forwards and helps you.

People are never happy

She is working to afford a surgery and people think it’s cute?

Disgraceful

There are many charities. btw Americans are a kind, generous ppl the family has raised the money for the surgery. Poor girl but crappy socialized medicine not the answer here.

Ugh... disgusting... disgraceful country.

Brave girl

I’m surprised the government hasn’t shut her down yet.

The true American way. Make a profit by any means necessary, no matter if your fellow citizens go broke, go homeless, get sick or die.

Not in Canada She would get the best care possible with our universal health care

This is sad 😥. Reality of system for decades.

America is supposed to be the greatest place to live? There should be free healthcare no matter what. Would they really not perform the surgery? This is really sad

As well it should. It's not a feel good story. It's a 'WTF has this country come to?' type of story that should spark a serious discussion and start a push to get laws passed to fix this. As an American, I can tell you for a FACT that neither action will be taken.

... i’ll save you all the read - it’s a US based story (Alabama) ... medicare in the US is not exactly free - end of story

for profit care..pure greed.

This is real. May your world always shine
