The nation's consumer health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor says seven workers at a poultry plant in Russia's south were confirmed to be infected with the H5N8 strain, but have since recovered without passing it on to anyone else.

Russia has registered the first case of the H5N8 bird flu strain being passed to humans from birds and has reported the matter to the World Health Organization .They have since recovered without infecting others, according to Russian health expertsThe nation's consumer health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor made the announcement on Saturday after seven workers at a poultry plant in Russia's south were confirmed to be infected with bird flu.

There was no sign of transmission between humans and all of the workers have now recovered, Ms Popova added.The report of human infections from bird flu has put parts of regional Russia on high alert. The WHO said it had been notified by Russia about a case of human infection with H5N8 and acknowledged this would, if confirmed, be the first time the strain had infected people.

"Preliminary information indicates that the reported cases were workers exposed to bird flocks," the WHO said in an emailed statement."We are in discussion with national authorities to gather more information and assess the public health impact of this event."
