Department of Health Secretary Brendan Murphy has spoken of the “great uncertainties” when it comes to COVID-19 and the vaccines as it is yet unknown whether Australians will require more vaccinations as the virus continues to mutate.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd has also spoken about the need to keep a closer eye on future variants of the virus to ensure herd immunity is reached and maintained.

“The results of the research and the clinical trials to date show both the Pfizer vaccine and the AstraZeneca vaccine…both appear to provide high levels of protection against the variants of concern which have appeared," Mr Kidd said. “We are following this very, very closely, obviously as new variants appear, particularly new variants which are shown to be more transmissible and at risk of causing even greater numbers of people to be infected in an outbreak.

Vaccine delays caused by Commonwealth ‘wanting to own’ the national rollout | Sky News AustraliaAfter tensions over the vaccine rollout pitted the states against the Commonwealth last week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison will be pushing for a streamlined vaccine distribution according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell. \n\nHowever, recent events have not helped the Commonwealth with the apparent side effect of blood clotting occurring in a Melbourne patient who received the AstraZeneca vaccine last week.\n\nMr Clennell said “this is one case in more than 400,000 doses given to date” but noted more cases have been reported in the EU and the UK causing some countries to limit the use of the treatment in some population groups.\n\nA further meeting is planned on Wednesday after further investigations into the Melbourne case and discussions with international regulators have taken place. \n\nMeanwhile NSW is setting up coronavirus vaccination clinics to assist with the Commonwealth rollout.\n\n“I am told there is nothing in writing NSW feels it has received from the federal government to suggest that it was invited to take part in a greater rollout than its program to vaccinate health and quarantine workers,' Mr Clennell said. \n\n“One NSW source said to me the federal government had decided they wanted to own the vaccination program and this is where problems with a smaller than expected rollout so far and inconsistencies with the rollout has occurred.”\n He hasn't streamlined a thing besides growing the national debt pre covid.
