With the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic (COVID-19), the Federation of Free Workers (FFW) believes workers will continue to suffer this year.

“If the economy continues to worsen, our workers will continue to suffer,” FFW President Sonny Matula said in a virtual press briefing.Matula said if there are no large interventions by the government, the economy will still drop if businesses and workers don’t have the capacity to fully recover.

Due to this, he urged the government particularly the Department of Labor and Employment to come out with financial assistance programs to both workers and companies. Matula stressed that wage subsidy is really necessary in order for small and medium enterprises to survive and be able to maintain their workers.

Based on the DOLE job displacement monitoring report, 400,000 workers were permanently displaced last year amid the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. The Labor department said 4.5 million workers were also affected by flexible work arrangement and temporary closures.
