US hospitals treating COVID-19 patients rarely allow healthy people on their wards. But the health workers at this Reno hospital are so sick of hoax claims and scepticism about coronavirus, they invited the ABC to spend the day with them.

"Whenever we are doing these procedures, we understand there is risk and things that can go wrong," he says.

On November 30, Dr Keeperman posted a selfie on Twitter from the Renown Regional Medical Center's makeshift ward in the hospital's car park. "Because this is real. This affects all walks of life, all political parties and it kills. This kills people."The hospital takes patients from Nevada, Northern California and Utah, an area the size of Victoria.

It was a mammoth logistical exercise turning a cold, dusty space into a hospital ward, able to safely treat patients but it was foresight other hospitals haven't had.For hospital administrator, Dr Anthony Slonim, the fight against COVID-19 in America is personal.
