Evan Woolley says a new proposal he’s bringing forward Monday would focus more time and money on mental health and outreach services instead of on traditional policing.
The notice for motion calls for five per cent of the Calgary Police Service budget to be moved over two years. The city’s current policing budget is more than $400 million. Woolley’s plan would see a large chunk of that money put towards mental health and community outreach support. “We have to send social workers and health professionals to do that work,” Ward 9 councillor Gian-Carlo Carra told CTV News. “The question is how can we bolster the services we have to respond quicker and more effectively, 24/7?”
