Victorian Shadow Police Minister SouthwickMP says the Victorian government’s back down on detention powers within the controversial Omnibus bill is a “victory for Victorians in their fight for freedoms and democracy”.

Victorian Shadow Police Minister David Southwick says the Victorian government’s back down on detention powers within the controversial Omnibus bill is a “victory for Victorians in their fight for freedoms and democracy”.

The Omnibus bill, which is currently before Victoria’s upper house, sparked scrutiny because the state government’s extraordinary powers would allow the appointment of anyone as an authorised officer to arrest anyone they suspected of breaching the chief health officer’s orders. “The bill will still go before parliament, but Daniel Andrews has backflipped on some of the key issues,” Mr Southwick told Sky News host Peter Gleeson.
