Guitar Virtuoso Eddie Van Halen Dies at 65

Eddie Van Halen, the innovative guitarist behind the band Van Halen, has died of throat cancer at the age of 65,confirmed the news on Twitter Wednesday afternoon. “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning,” he wrote. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.

Throughout his time leading the band, Van Halen was known for his virtuosity on the electric guitar, blending classical and rock techniques, and inventing wholly new approaches to solos. The band, which released a string of hit albums in the late 1970s and 80s, was one of the first hard rock bands to reach mainstream success and have sold more than 50 million albums.

They met after a concert near Bertinelli’s hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana. “ After the concert, they talked for hours about Van Halen’s youth in Holland, their strict Catholic upbringings, and the trials of show business,”wrote in 1997. A few months later Van Halen moved from his parents’ home to her house in the Hollywood Hills. Wolfgang, the couple’s son, was born in 1991; he later joined Van Halen as a bassist.

In 2001, Van Halen announced that he had been diagnosed with oral cancer on the Van Halen website, after a surgery in 2000 that ultimately removed a third of his tongue and left him with slightly altered speech. In October 2019, that he had been battling throat cancer and occasionally traveling to Germany for radiation therapy for the last five years.
