Nigeria needs 800,000 nurses for its growing population —NANNM punchhealthwise

A medical expert says Nigeria needs about 800,000 nurses and midwives to meet up with its teeming population of over 200 million people.

It lays emphasis on the availability of sufficient numbers of qualified health workers in the right place as essential for the delivery of quality health services to the population. “Ordinarily, we should have about 800,000 nurses and midwives to Nigeria’s population of about 210 million. But in reality, what we have is less than 200,000 nurses operating in the country.

Beyond the recruitment of additional manpower, Abdrafiu said, the government must invest more on training nurses in the country. “In the past 60 years, we can say there have been one or two attempts at improving the quality of services and entire healthcare system. This is because it is the healthcare system that renders services.
