A female inmate deemed too dangerous for release because of her shocking history of violence is at the centre of a “messy” dilemma for authorities.

She has cut her own throat, bashed her head against a wall 105 times, and killed fellow inmate Bluce Lim Ward by stabbing her 33 times with a kitchen knife in 2003.

Her case has exposed a “lacuna” in the law in which people who have served their sentence but remain in prison under the High Risk Offenders Act cannot currently be detained as forensic patients. But he said it was a “great concern” that the justice system would have to effectively relinquish responsibility of Butterfield, handing serious decisions about protecting the community to doctors.

Butterfield appeared over video link from Silverwater women’s prison and gazed intently at the courtroom during the proceedings.
