A police officer in Salt Lake City shot a 13-year-old boy with Asperger's syndrome after his mom called 911 to request a crisis intervention team for him, as he was experiencing a mental health crisis. He's reportedly in serious condition.

, Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Keith Horrocks said officers were called to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. to respond to a"violent psych issue" involving a juvenile who"had made threats to some folks with a weapon."

The page says that while the long-term effects of those injuries are still unknown,"it is likely that his recovery will be long and require multiple kinds of treatment." "He's a small child. Why don't you just tackle him?" Barton said."You are big police officers with massive amounts of resources. Come on, give me a break.", a grassroots organization that promotes autism acceptance and self-advocacy, said in a statement that people are less likely to be able to think rationally and respond promptly when they are experiencing a mental health crisis.

Typical bitch ass cop behavior.

So, did it work?

All the “investigation” is going to do is find ways to validate these actions. They will cover up for this officer. They always do. And this is exactly the problem. They are cavemen with guns using unnecessary violence. They don’t know how to do anything but shoot.

'911 what's your emergency?' 'Yeah I just need you to send someone over here to shoot my teenage son. Can you do that?

911 needs to have more ways to sort calls. A crisis team could have been sent just like a fire engine would have gone if it were a fire. Each agency has a specialty ... we need to reassess what we are asking police to do given how they are trained and the tools they have

She sue and hopefully be able to get him some therapy as well as medical... why does it have to be this way? Oh wait.we allow it of by and for

They expected a 13 year-old with a developmental disorder to remain more calm and respond to the situation more than a TRAINED ADULT. He didn’t, so they shot him. Welcome to America.

I’m sure that’s the whole story and you might try to look up ASD, the DSM criteria has changed.

How in the world can we continue to arm inept, untrained killers!?

We lack an understanding and awareness of what mental illness is, we are reluctant or ashamed to admit it, and mental illness is highly stigmatized. Mental health is overlooked! Read:

This is why I hope the nfl kneels tomorrow

Just can’t understand how come someone, not caring weapons, can get shot by police, while is running in the opposite direction!! First, the person can be tracked or followed by car, until he/she get tired! The answer is that, there a lot of happy triggers with poor training around!

Defund the police and deprive them of resources until they become officers of the peace instead of execution squads.

when they say defund the police; they mean fund programs to help people in situations like this.

LunarRoot 'When you're a hammer, the whole world is a nail.' They are ultra-violent people who know nothing beyond violence. That's why so many resort to the gun first.

Since we have BlackLivesMatter , can we create ‘Disabled lives matter’ as a sub movement along with blm? Police need to be held accountable, and trained in this type of situation if they aren’t already

And this is why we need police reform! Mentalhealth

This is why police shouldn't be called to handle mental health issues.

Where is Fox News now? Where is tucker Carlson’s boat shoe? Why are they not reporting on this?

For years we have advocated for better training for police officers to help them understand mental health and developmental disabilities. Too many tragedies. We need to rethink policing and make sure that all police officers are prepared to protect the public.

911 doesn’t dispatch mental health professionals. Wrong number to call

Drs don’t want to deal with these out of control kids and parents can’t handle them. Cops shouldn’t be involved at all. Who’s responsible for controlling these kids?

cnn foxnews msnbc realDonaldTrump Cop training seems to be different(worse) today compared to 30 years ago( or maybe cops have lower IQ these days). This kind of stuff didn't happen then because I think cops were NOT aggressive and made better judgements.

Disarm the police. Defund the police.

kid must be white or it would say otherwise in the headline.

Will you also be reporting on the good work police officers do or does NPR only report bad news regarding police?

“Aspergers” is an outdated term. You just got got, biiiiiiih!

Officer thoughts that if no any a boy then no any problem ?

Sad&too often our police just do not have the training to deal with the mentally ill.God help this mother who not only cares for a special needs son,not to blame herself for the call&result.911 was the right call for help until we have a for mental health crisis?Pray for mom&son

It's Autism Spectrum Disorder. Asperger was a Nazi doctor who did horrific experiments on people with Autism. We don't use his name to describe the disability anymore.

One of the most developed nations on the face of the earth does not know how to deal with mental health emergencies. Instead of trained experts, trigger-happy officers are sent to emergencies they’re more likely to escalate & cause harm, than to diffuse & provide help.

'See BLM! We shoot disabled white people too!'

Police can legally lie to you and execute you on the spot, do not trust them. They are trained to fear us and that their lives are more valuable than ours.

Cowboy mentality is out of control

No mention of the race of the boy who was shot? So unlike you NPR (National Propaganda Radio). Sorry, I read the article. The boy who got shot was white. That explains it.

Horrific. I raised two kids with autism. There was never help of any kind. It was brutal. Still is.

Why is DeadlyForce being used on unarmed Individuals? That’s supposed to be the last resort. You use what is necessary for the situation. A 13 yr old could of been tackled. Could of been maced. But shot?! Are you kidding me!!! Police Parents Children

Police are not crime fighters. They respond to crime and often times create more problems than they solve.

The core problem is we expect police to be everything. This shouldn’t be about defunding as much a better balance. Communities need the equivalent of mental health EMTs

WTF! All they do is shoot! Take away their guns if they cannot handle them.

NPR reporting the news lately 👏

So fucking sad. Tragic. And absolutely Disgusting. Another prime example of why police in this country NEED BETTER training.. these cops should loose there jobs be arrested and charged with attempted murder. Period.

Calls to defund the police include measures to reroute some of their budget to health responders and other social services.

At least the police don't discriminate... despicable.

Justice for Linden!

Now you know what defund the police means.

This madness has to stop.

When will they listen?

An armed, trained, grown man shot a child with a developmental impairment. There is no excuse. This is their primary response because they know there is little chance of repercussion. SaltLakeCity

What about this young lady?

Crisis hotline?

This hurts my heart. This officer should spend life in prison, especially if he knew this child had a disability

theodoricofyork I don’t care if he has autism, you don’t shoot a 13-year-old, attempted murder charges, the entire department obviously needs training,!!

Asperger is not an acceptable term for the autistic boy on the spectrum. You should know that NPR, it’s offensive.

It is almost as if some of them see murdering the disabled and other races as some sort of solution.

Ours has become a culture of brutality. This we can change.

theodoricofyork Press charges against that cop,!! & The town, for poor training,!!!

Why is it the cops job to help calm down her child who is having separation anxiety because she has to go to work? This makes no sense why this woman would call the police over this.

Denver seems to be taking a different approach. Hope it works better than this!

there's no reforming this. we need crisis intervention independent of police and their guns and their history of force and violence and racism. abolish the police.

Don’t call the cops unless you need someone killed.

In before the bootlickers say he a mentally ill 13yr old should’ve just complied.

people still call the police for... help?

Lack of training.
