Fungal infections kill an estimated 1.7 million people a year globally. The burden of disease due to fungal infection in South Africa is estimated at more than three million cases per year. These figures are especially shocking given that prior to 1980, fungal infections were not a major health problem.

With the Covid-19 pandemic currently at the forefront of news and public awareness, we have all become more attuned to seeing data regarding numbers of infections and deaths. As I write this, the worldwide cumulative case count of Covid-19 stands at more than 20 million, with more than 700,000 deaths. You may also know that there are other infections causing great concern, such as HIV , tuberculosis , and malaria .

A second reason for the increase in fungal infections is the increased resistance of these fungi to the available antifungal drugs.
