The head of Morehouse School of Medicine talks about the dearth of Black medical students, how to get more Black men into medicine and the way patients will access care in the future

. They are also more likely to enjoy healthier lives if treated by Black doctors, but there aren’t enough. Valerie Montgomery Rice is working to address these disparities.

Dr. Montgomery Rice became president of Morehouse School of Medicine in 2014. The historically Black institution produces the third-highest number of Black doctors among all U.S. medical schools, putting Dr. Montgomery Rice in a position to impact one of America’s most pressing health challenges. Last week, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Bloomberg Philanthropies gave $100 million to Morehouse School of Medicine and three other historically Black medical schools. The gift will allow the school to reduce the debt of 215 students by $100,000, paving the way for more graduates to go into primary care instead of higher-paying specialties and to practice in underserved communities, a spokesman for the school says.

Growing up in Mason, Ga., Dr. Montgomery Rice was the only Black student in her high school honors program. She went on to Harvard Medical School, practiced infertility medicine, and became the founding director of the Center for Women’s Health Research at Meharry Medical College, one of the nation’s first research centers devoted to studying diseases that disproportionately affect women of color.

Just lower the standards - isn’t that always their solution?

Start educating the children and stop brain washing then. Reform our education system.

How about hiring the best qualified candidate.

only 10% of the population is black.

Racism? How many black lawyers, business owners, mayors, council members, doctors, dentists, scientists, police chiefs, fire chiefs, legislators, college presidents, public administrators, policy directors, do we have? white majority even voted in a black president.

Rich and educated BLacks should shoulder more of these responsibilities rather than run away from their roots, enjoy the privileges and blame racism. It is about economics. The ones whose made it move and or marrying into white neighborhood.

They need to make medical school like in Mexico. They cut out all the BS classes like history, art, etc. Pure science and medicine. Finish sooner

How about studying hard, getting excellent grades, putting your life on hold for 10 years or more to train, giving up sleep, family life, weekends and holidays, and passing and re-taking the Boards for the rest of your career? That is what my husband has done for 41 years.

Dr. Ben Carson, for starters.

Ummm why men specifically?

Should be based on qualifications who gets in, not skin color

I knew a young black person who planned to become a doctor. Her black friends criticized her, told her she was being “too white”. I’m not making this up. Racism is complicated.

Now this is a worthwhile endeavor.

Wasn't that just slightly racist? How about all color's needed in study of Medicine!

More docs, period.

Wait, What? How can that be? On every TV show or movie there are at least 2 black doctors for every 3 white doctors and 1 Asian doctor? Which I always found weird since the black population only makes up 16%.

I've been hearing many of my healthcare professional friends and circles saying this for quite some time now. Glad to see the awareness spreading and solutions being devised.

Qualifications. End of story. Color has zero to do with anything.

If i'm in dire need of medical care and a fucking 'diversity' hire comes walking thru the curtain i'll wheel myself out of there and go find a damn witch doctor. Probably have better odds !

Why black Men?! You are sexist!

I want a doctor don’t care what color or sex the doctor is, as long as they know how to treat what my ailment is ,

You know what, I’m not racist, I’m white, and to be honest, I’m starting to feel like white people are trash compared to the media’s story. We’ve never been talked up, there’s no celebration for white lives, straight sex, or male and female gender, I don’t get it 🤨

Maybe some professional role models, instead of street thugs, might help!

Very important issue, good job

More men, what about more Black women too?

Fine, as long as they are admitted based on being the most qualified, this as opposed to being admitted based on the color of their skin.

I mean.. if my life’s on the line I’m gonna want the best doctor not the “more black doctors” doctor.

The problem with this tweet is its racist overtones. Colour of skin isn't relevant.

Any chance we could use some of the basic 19 trillion dollars in reparation money to offset the student expenses!

Seems everyone in the USA is a racist.

Distribute medical certificates.
