Deputy Chief Medical Officer Nick Coatsworth has advised people struggling with Melbourne's extended lockdown to make their beds to help boost their mental health.

"It sounds so simple, but if you get into some structure and routine for the next two weeks while the stage four restrictions are still in place in metro Melbourne and the surrounds, those sorts of achievable goals and structure can be very important to keep you on track."something that you enjoy to do, a hobby.

The federal government has doubled the number of Medicare rebates Victorians can access for sessions with psychologists and other mental health professionals to 20 per calendar year. While Lifeline has reported an unprecedented volume of calls from Victorians during the lockdown, data released by the Victorian coroner last month

revealed there had been no increase in the number of people dying by suicide during the coronavirus pandemicModelling by the Sydney Brain and Mind Institute published in May predicted a 25 per cent increase in suicides owing to COVID-19. Numbers to call for support: Lifeline 13 11 14; Mensline 1300 789 978; Kids Helpline 1800 551 800; beyondblue 1300 224 636.

Morrison + Aged Care Deaths = PINK BATS 2020

If I made my bed in the morning I'd consider myself mentally unwell.

Great advise. All people who are now in lockdown for half a year, make your bed. It will make you feel better about the pandemic and your lost freedoms.

I’m thinking the mental health of the people of Melbourne would be boosted if this bozo took a long walk off a short pier.

Oh I hate making my bed... that’s why I have a doonah!🤣🥴😳🤣

Divisive paper perpetuating fear and intolerance through disinformation for a sake of cheap headlines, instead of being part of the solution U pedal cynical headlines when people are dying shame on you!

If it looks stupid, acts stupid and then opens its mouth to prove it, well.......? And he’ll have his hand out next week to get paid, totally unlike most decent people down there. Good on ya Dan!!

Next step. Tell the truth or at least don’t lie!

I find that rubbing one out before walking into stressful situations helps. Any advice on technique Doctor?

Haha!!. Has he ever made one himself, I wonder.

Wow very insightfull ..... his boss Scottyfromarketing must have got into his ear.

Australia started as a prison colony. Looks like will end like that as well.

DontMakeYourBed 🤬

Thanks for Jordan Peterson, I getting there

What the....

What a moronic comment. If this is the best he can offer she should bugger off!

Hahaha

You may be a doctor, But dont kid yourself, Youre NO Dr jordanbpeterson

That only leaves another 23 hours and 58 minutes to fill in each day

DanielAndrewsMP or VictorianCHO can you tell me why we are still in stage 4 when stage 3 was adequate with the number of daily cases as we are seeing now? There is no clarity as to why. Why are we not going back to 3? Or is it just Dan dictating actions, like the curfew?

Typical Bureaucratic stupidity.

Is regular washing & changing of sheets recommended too. 😳 That always feels nice..🤔

There is nothing like exciting and innovative health initiatives from our dear leaders to help us have happy and fulfilled lives.

Solid advice! 🙌

Just a reminder, Sweden's deaths have been nearly nil for weeks and next to nothing for months despite no lockdowns or mask laws. Think about it people!

What about you come down to Melbourne and live here, & not suggest funny solutions?

I feel so much better.....

More BS from a puppet

Oh, such leadership, this is truly underwhelming. Being snuggled up in bed with Netflix or a book worked for me on those very cold days

And it seems people with virus are not isolating. Send them to army camp in NT to keep their arses still..

So give nickcoatsworth1 a 50% pay cut until everybody's back it work, its called an incentive ie not sitting on your public servant arse virtue signalling and making stupid insulting comments like that while Nick gets full pay. JennyMikakos COVID19 COVID19Victoria normanswan

What? Who doesn't make their bed. Oh! Got it. Boys.

Nick should stick to his knitting and worry more about the vax than beds.

Andrews has made his own bed, he just wont lie in it!

I made my bed but I still feel like shit.

Do Victorians even bother getting out of bed these days?

Yep going bankrupt but I’m feeling better, I made my bed

I have a better idea. Kick out the Labor government. You'll feel MUCH better!🤣

What a joke! Lets talk health. Victoria has had a 33 per cent decrease in breast cancer screening in Victoria. A 3 month delay in treatment can result in a 25 per cent increase in mortality! 6 months since screening has been open so far!!

Although there is more advice offered in the article than to make one's bed, it all comes in the context of the Fed Gov otherwise practicing profound neglect and abuse of Victorians throughout one of Australia's worst health emergencies on record.

As trivial as it sounds, it’s actually a good idea to try and get some structured activities while in lockdown... get up, brush teeth, get dressed etc. Although it’s not the absolute answer, it will help by giving you small goals to set and achieve.

There’s a lot to be said about routine... waking at the same time, making your bed and getting some exercise is critical for your mind health during these times. Agree. Make your bed, keep your surroundings tidy and get some fresh air. Stay well and strong Mel 💪

Sutton and Andrews have consistently infantilised and frightened the population to ensure compliance with a draconian and unnecessary lockdown which is worse than the disease itself in the suffering, misery and morbidity it causes.

I do it every day. It’s my message to myself that the day has started.

Disgusting, wake up Australia or Melbourne I should say.

But that would require getting out of bed.

Maintaining activities of daily life is actually solid advice and nowhere near as trite as this headline makes it seem.

Make your bed, but...

What a super smart man 🤦🏽‍♀️

Stupid tweet by to highlight this. Bed-making was a mere suggestion for people who like routine. His most pointed advice was to stay socially connected, which is absolutely critical and should be promoted everywhere everyday. Not this drivel

No. Shouldn’t have gone there. Been used time and time again. Not about you mate.....

Wanker

There is hope for me to be a doctor yet

This guy must be slow.

Is he really serious? Do you know how many times came to my mind to eliminate my life during these weeks

Not only bed, I hv make up the room as well as the whole entire house & garden but you know what? Having no sense of security in life with never-ending lockdown plus COVID lingering in the air your advise doesn’t seem to make any sense! Oh I forgot, you get the pay check on time!

Health officer, baloney. Why doesn't he know that an unmade bed that has aired for longer is healthier than a made one.

I feel like this was taken out of context to make a catchy controversial headline. Obviously making your bed won't cure depression, but forming good habits and keeping your environment clean is proven to be good for your mental health long term.

Is this guys for real Wat did I just read What do they think people have been doing over the last 6 months We want our lives back

While having daily routines can help maintain positivity, reducing depression to such simplicity is kind of insulting to the genuine problems people are enduring. Collapsing businesses, spiraling debt & loneliness can not be fixed by making the bed!

DictatorDan 's mental health policy for covid shutdown. Can't believe Aussies have fallen for this BS.

So, we've moved on from 'washing your hands' to making your bed, hah... well, 'Wash Your Hands' was a classic Sesame Street children's TV song... but there is nothing new in this either... lame, really lame... 😏

Ridiculous headline🙄

Ridicule all you like, this is actually a thing. Making your bed first thing give you a sense of accomplishment and helps motivate your day. Tidying your room/the house helps your mind be orderly and “tidy”. There are many physical tricks that help build a positive mind. Prayer!

What?

This is taken out of context. If you hear what he said, this is not bad advice. It’s very helpful to have little routines to make the day seem more normal. Open the curtains and making your bed can make a world of difference. I practice this is my pre covid life. Take the advice.

CHO and DCHO made their beds when they allowed countless overseas travelers and cruise ships into our country by closing the borders way too late. Now they have to lay in it.

Arrogant nutter

What a misleading, disingenuous tweet. nick_coatsworth outlined a range of proven psych strategies to help us cope in lockdown You reduced it to clickbait to manipulate response, belittle his advice DoBetter COVID19Vic

I understand where he’s coming from, but honestly, make the bed? It’s just not enough to combat the gut-wrenching stress of it all.

'dig holes and fill them in' is a Krugman/Soviet make work scheme, and essentially meaningless. Nice of him to clear the air.

Exactly what i tell my partner every morning!

Offering advice from ‘12 Rules for Life’ might not be a career move in dictatorDan’s bureaucrat utopia

Arrogant elite with no empathy nor insight.

That's akin to putting a bandaid on a gushing artery. Address the cause. End the lockdown

FFS

But if I make my bed, don’t I have to lie in it?

I would advise the deputy chief medical officer visit North Korea and stay there.

Pekamagess That will fix it!

Wipe ur lips to help stop the spread of bullshit.

The age is a joke now. A bad one

In the words of my esteemed daughter I’ll make YOUR bed.

He is right, one needs a routine. When everything else fails, routine becomes a trusted friend

'It's hard for people in other areas of Australia to understand' followed with 'make your bed to build structure.' He should have just left it at the first part.

That’s as good as the last clown tweeting about captain cook and Covid so out of touch

if you smoke some weed and down several shots of whiskey before you make that bed you can boost mental health and kill a few hours

it's also recommended to dust the sausage roll crumbs off your dressing gown at least once a week

Just made the kids beds too, this is a magical elixir!!! Lock me down forever, bed making is my saviour.

A shit framing of this message by the age makes it sound trivial. Yet most shrinks will be saying this to patients. Try to keep your routines. Get small things done cause its psychologically helpful. Give yourself credit for doing the little things.

It kind of does help but someone with major depression will find it almost impossible to do that. I’m the type of person that has to do a morning routine (inc making the bed) to get started with the day. Even if I’m having suicidal thoughts, but other people may struggle with it.

Dr Cvntsworth needs to check himself before he wrecks himself.

The good doc has been reading jordanbpeterson

My partner makes my bed 😕

Ok Jordan Peters....... I mean Nick Coatsworth.

Hey Nick, I hear that NSW has the gold standard in bed making. Is that why their contract tracing is so amazeballs..?

Better than shitting the bed I guess.

nickcoatsworth1 if only it was that simple

Can he please tell my kids that...

That’s ok let’s all join him because he has just made his....Fuckwit.

Now THEY are telling us what to do at home!! Wake up sheep!!

Does that mean I have to get out of bed?

Don’t have a bed to make.... Had to sell it

That's gonna help! Wtf is wrong with these people? I guess when your still getting paid full wages in a secure job why would you care if others are struggling

Thanks. I feel like I could do this for another 6 months now 😁

Not the best advice but I can 'see' what he is meaning..very judgemental and not at all empathetic.

Wow, thanks for that!

Who does he think he is? Jordan Peterson?
