Fungal disease threatens to change the face of Perth's most popular beaches

Eight are being chopped down this week, but many more are at riskEight trees in the Town of Cambridge, including some along the West Coast Highway, are being chopped down this week after being affected by the fungal disease, colloquially known as the "top-down" disease because it kills the branches at the top of the tree first.

Ms Hahn said the disease had wreaked havoc in coastal New South Wales areas including Manly Beach and Byron Bay where the disease was not diagnosed until it was too late.Eight trees in the Town of Cambridge are being chopped down this week. "These trees have stood the test of time. They've been through cyclones, heat spells but now they're really toppling at an astonishing and really alarming rate," Professor Dixon said.

They were originally grown for the old sailing ships to replace their broken masts. They’re a common site in coastal Australia. Maybe we could plant some local native plants instead, because we sure don’t need them anymore.
