What were all their occupations? Were they smokers or exposed to second hand smoke? Did they ever have pneumonia? etc etc etc

I can confirm that symptoms stay at least six months after the onset. Eight months later and I'm still feeling them.

Influenza. viral meningitis or viral(non Coronal) pneumonias can all result in extended recovery time.
