I'm no doctor, but I think the biggest issue is touching your eyes. It's a direct path with only your eyelashes to protect against, well, things going into your eyes. Nose hair, mucus, ear hair and wax, saliva, but the eyes have nothing like that. My hypothesis.

CDC had a story awhile back about an outbreak in a business. Out of 5 employees, 2 employees who wore just face shields got sick, while the other 3 employees who wore masks didn't get sick. Optimally you should wear both mask and shield.
