Mental health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been profound, researchers find. Nearly 25% of Americans are depressed, particularly those who have low incomes and have lost a job or a loved one.

Like the other effects of the pandemic — health and economic — the mental health effects are being disproportionately borne by people who started out with fewer social supports and financial resources, the study finds.

"People with lower income were twice as likely to have depression," Ettman says,"and among people within the same income group, [those] who had less in savings were 1.5 times more likely to have depression." Those who had lost a job, or experienced the death of a loved one were at a significantly higher risk of having symptoms of depression.

That disproportionate effect, Galea says,"compounds existing problems and runs the risk of creating further divides between health haves and have-nots." That's because depression and other mental illnesses put people at risk of a host of physical health problems, which in turn affect their ability to work and maintain their social connections."Poorer mental health is at the heart of poor health," Galea says."More broadly, it's at the heart of poor economic function, poor social function.""The second pandemic, I would suggest, is not only coming but is here," Everly says.

Experienced healthcare professionals are Prematurely RETIRING ,the remaining ones are showing signs of TIRING, COVID19 continues its DEVOURING ,our legislators MUST consider this crucial piece of WIRING to the Covidrelief bill they’re McGYVERING!! s3599 add this at No cost

SeattleBryn Important piece from RhituC “What's more, some of the public health measures required to keep us safe from the virus have taken away our most effective ways of buffering stress...social connection within a community.”

ZLevyMD Odd that PTSD isn't mentioned, since many will come away with it. Interestingly, natural disasters such as hurricanes don't typically cause it, but a pandemic def will due to anxiety/stress from every direction.

Uh yeah. This is not tea.

A great read for anyone trying to cope during these uncertain stressful times

Weird....

Is it the pandemic or is it dtRump’s presidency?

...where's blow-out gate?

As a recovery coach - case manager for people with co-occurring disorders, working in Norristown, PA trust me when I say it is a lot worst than people can imagine.

I mean, is this really a surprise?

Or maybe it's because of Trump.... I know my depression and anxiety get worse every day.

But slander those who try to reopen. Isn’t that your thing, ?

It’s understandable and awful.

Funny how Trump, and non-Fauci doctors who have seen a patient more recently than 50 years ago, all predicted this would happen.

mestephaniee “We were surprised at the high levels of depression” With all due respect, are they stupid? We all saw this coming a mile away

It's not the pandemic. It's the absurd politicization of this by both Democrats and Republicans, the mixed messaging and illogic from them, and the lack of leadership in every direction. Time to move forward and allow adults to make their own choices about how to respond to it.

Is there a specific hashtag that those depressed by COVID are tagging?

Times are tough. If anyone reading this is looking for affordable mental health support (therapy, support groups, chat lines, self-help courses, etc.) check out our directory: Take care 💜

Yes but you have 2 take in2 consideration the emotional state of the nation excluding CV19 too. Trump admin caused fear/division/hatred/TRAUMA. The people are abused as victims of domestic violence are. Add a Pandemic on top & it's effect on MH is much more significant

Not for Nancy Pelosi She Is Special.

It’s depressing knowing there’s no end in sight while this total incompetent is in charge.

Good Ole NPR, reporting about depression to make us all feel better. And now, everyone is “jumping” on the bandwagon to blame everyone else because this is exactly what depressed people do. If you’re crazy, your crazy. And nothing is ever going to change that. Feeble, Weak Minds!

Ever considered that the non-stop parade of depressing stories on NPR shows might be a contributing factor?

My husband was a very early casualty. DOD 4/30/20.

Meanwhile my introverted social anxiety self has never felt better

It’s not just the pandemic. It’s also Trump.

Society now is not use to adversity.

It’s not just the pandemic. It’s experiencing a pandemic during a presidential term with Cancerous Donald Trump in charge. It’s a miracle we all aren’t depressed. The pandemic isn’t the problem.

Mankind is social we are supposed to laugh, hug and interact in person with each other. Without community we are lost at sea and will wither away on a little raft. The plandemic has severed many peoples connections to one another. Fight back and see a loved one today.

Open America Now.

I think someday our progeny will look back with confusion at how badly we organized society and with amusement at how seriously we believed otherwise.

Yesterday I heard HHS is giving $250 Million to a PR company to make us feel better about the pandemic. I'm sure that money could be better spent to actually help the 25% of Americans depressed, don't you?

Nah, that's just year 3 of Trump.

It is the pandemic PLUS the handling of it, and knowing we would be in much better shape if things had been done right. Instead, we’re stuck and fighting with our neighbors and co-workers on whether this whole thing is real

duh?

Bill is sooo happy with NPR! Conditioning for mandatory vaccines from a person who thinks population control is the worlds greatest crisis Trace the $ back to NPR COVID news. All day. Every Day. NPR owes Bill. Follow the $ on every story DefundNPR

No shit

I think depressed over failure of fed gov dealing coronavirus sick of trump bs taking toll emotional health. I want get trump & gop bs out pwer. Least have chance better improving odds life

Media has been traumatizing half the country with lies and fear. NPR is guilty

It was already bad the suicide rate has been going up the last 20 years we need healthcare for all

Please RT this and ask this man for an interview. THX!

Doesn’t help that our president & senate leadership are malicious/indifferent/incompetent/ in their response to the pandemic.

I think it is also because of all the stress trump causes. I’m speaking for myself and my friends. Trump causes so much stress and then the pandemic was the icing. It’s extremely difficult to see the entire world being negatively effected by a mad man bent on power.

A lot of mental health organizations are struggling to stay open as they are not able to receive government support. Many of these are non-profits.

People are more depressed during the pandemic for the same reason they were depressed before the pandemic; no money.

Try being single in the pandemic 😔

It is depressing to know our leadership wasted the precious little time we had to prepare by pretending it was all a hoax by political opponents.

The mental health toll... Have you met 2020?

Oh you don't say? Completely changing people's way of life and scaring them senseless over something that's seeming more and more like a scam causes high rates of depression? Who would have thunk it.

Thanks to the prayers of Donald and Mike pence

Election fraud and violence directed at our country is worse...pretty bad when consider suicide as answer if and when our country falls to the left wing mobs...and these political criminals. It’s very difficult to watch our beautiful Nation fall apart. No hope for our democracy.
