PETALING JAYA: There is a need to tighten the borders to make sure Covid-19 cases from abroad do not spread into the country, says Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said some of the countries considered to be role models in the fight against Covid-19, such as South Korea and New Zealand, were experiencing a surge in cases.

In giving the thumbs up to a decision to bar long-term pass holders from India, Indonesia and Philippines from entering the country starting from Sept 7, Dr Noor Hisham said there was a need for cooperation from multiple parties to implement these controls. “Malaysians and citizens from 154 other countries are not allowed into Japan. Every country takes its own precautions. We are also taking such action, ” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham also said a new Covid-19 cluster was detected at a police lock-up in Lahad Datu, Sabah, with seven positive cases detected so far.
