A woman from northern NSW pregnant with twins has lost one of her unborn babies after she was unable to enter Queensland for emergency surgery.

Queensland's top health official says the sheer number of people applying for medical exemptions to enter her state is"unsustainable" following the death of an unborn twin in NSW.

He hasn't spoken with his daughter or her husband, but his wife is staying with the couple, who have had to rent an apartment in across the road from the hospital. "I believe I am a compassionate person but at this point in time we are working through the process. All of these exemptions come to me and I work through them," Dr Young said.

"I actually genuinely believe, and we do this in Queensland, that whenever possible you should get care close to where you live," she said.Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said her"compassionate state" was open for all Australians needing emergency medical care, but said she wasn't involved in assessing individual medical exemption applications.

Hasn’t this been proven to be untrue

Air ambulance is an option for prenatal transfer. Why didn't the doctor try for that?

So not the best time to get pregnant, if you are high risk... Contrary to what Scott Morrison says. 💙 heart goes out to the family 💙

Imagine being pregnant with twins, needing emergency surgery, and having to deal with the bureaucracy of whether you can travel to the nearest hospital across the border. And then being told you should have spent precious time asking for approval...

Wt!!

I am sure the 80-89 year olds might consider themselves less important than the life of a newborn baby.

Not You too SBS!! please dont follow in your Auntys current footsteps

NSWs health service is not adequate?

So the selfishness of this woman who chose to put her own comfort first instead of the health of the babies is now been twisted and blamed on QLD policies which are in place to protect its own population? Yeah ok, not a misleading title at all.

senbmckenzie And untrue!! Political bias in such a tragic situation is not only sick but disgraceful senbmckenzie and I’m a lib ... for ? how much longer I’m not sure!! Queensland LiberalAus

That is so heartbreaking the trauma of losing a child is unbearable that is taking things to far..

Presenting the actual facts would have been nice.

Is this fake news

Except it's not true...

They didn't ask and didn't apply ... stop this !!!

Why are we NOT asking why Northern NSW has pathetic medical & hospital facilities? They have been voting the mining& coal, Nat Party in for years & they have done nothing about this situation. Any other member lucky enough to represent them have been ignored.

Not true

This is a disgusting stirring up of populist outrage! Pure and utter lies! NO medical emergency, ambulance or otherwise is refused at the border! People other than the patient need permission, including this partner, which can be done online! TRUTH in media, needs legislation!

The baby didn’t have 16 hours to wait ..this is very wrong . All pregnant women & seriously ill people should qualify with a doctors certificate at the border ..end of story . AnnastaciaMP . No election or whatever is worth putting people lives at risk to manage covid19 gladys

Seriously people use your brains & think!!Stop believing blindly our media that continues to be grasping at sensationalism & misinformation.

This is fake news. She didn't attempt to go to Queensland.

So sad 😞

Why on earth are people being denied health care over these border closures? Everyone appreciates that the border closure is a solid political stunt, but do we really have to punish people and deny them surgery? So petty and puerile.

I’m seeing comments about how the mom was technically allowed to enter but the partner wasn’t so they chose to fly to Sydney. Obviously a woman doesn’t want her partner with her during labour right? Why not leave her alone? And AP confirmed QLD hospitals are for Queenslanders

She was able to enter - her partner wasn't. She chose to go to Sydney. The transport delays were not caused by Qld. Please don't mislead people.

Please see Qld Health presser & Dr Jeannette Young on this this morning. All emergencies from nthn NSW move across border as they have done for yrs. No difference.

'Brisbane Times understands the woman would not have needed an exemption to travel to Queensland because her case was considered emergency care, but her family members would have had to apply for an exemption to enter the state.'

Can anyone recommend a legitimate way to read the news? Obviously not here

Typical doctor who thinks they're God. Why does every request have to go through Dr Young? If it's so untenable a situation and you're so busy, then allow others to approve them. Get help. Don't think you're so great that you're the only person who can make a bloody decision!

She had to fly to Sydney bc getting an exemption from Qld would have taken to long. And her town probably has zero cases of covid.

That’s unforgivable.

That is just a big disgrace. Christ RED TAPE get it together. We pay to have so called smart people make smart decisions. You don't need to be a brain surgeon to know what's right or wrong. It's like telling the farmers to put their sheep on a plane. Pay you a fortune for what?

This can’t be correct. I’ve heard it’s been misreported

So sad . Yet we will let uni students in because we need money . We lost a small life .

Blood on pallaschuks hands

is the Tweed Hospital that bad?

Um, I believe the doctors made a decision to fly to NSW. “Ambulances, emergencies and Angel flights are welcome to cross Queensland borders at any time”

Expected when stupid people are employed to excersice power over others without the ability to think and reason.

*puts head in hand and shakes it* ... ...

Bullshit. Fake news!

The absolute lunacy of lockdowns.

But like AnnastaciaMP said:

This is a misleading headline. She was able to enter QLD. No ambulances, police, rescue flights etc are stopped. Please fix the headline as you are adding to the misinformation causing fear and suffering.

Wow that's sad
