The Morrison government has refused to publicly rebuke Liberal backbencher Craig Kelly for using the federal parliament and his social media account to attack its reliance on clinical evidence in banning the controversial COVID-19 treatment hydroxychloroquine.
Dr Margaret Heffernan, an RMIT lecturer who researches attitudes to vaccination, described Mr Kelly's speech as "extremely dangerous" and warned MPs had a responsibility to ensure the views they aired were accurate as many people lacked the health literacy to "separate misinformation and fantasy" from fact."Craig Kelly is in a position of influence and should not be coming out with these wild statements with no factual evidence," Dr Heffernan said.
Mr Kelly also attacked the National COVID-19 Clinical Taskforce, on which the federal government sits alongside 29 peak health professional bodies whose members treat people with COVID-19, for its advice that hydroxychloroquine is "potentially harmful and no more effective than standard care in treating patients with COVID-19."
Acting chief medical officer Professor Paul Kelly summarised the AHPPC's position on hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19 at a press conference with Prime Minister Scott Morrison earlier this month, when he said: "In terms of its use for this particular disease, the jury is pretty much out: It doesn't work."
