Senate President Vicente Sotto III says he is not keen on the idea of using text messaging in spreading information on teenage pregnancy, as provided in the proposed Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy Act.

“It will be irritating to many. Because there are 129,714,398 prepaid subscribers in the country. And they will blast all of them? They will not be able to determine who among them are adolescents, parents, or teachers,” Sotto said on Tuesday.

Sotto suggested that teaching sex education in the classroom or in community-based orientations would be enough in promoting awareness on teenage pregnancy. “Apparently, our public education efforts so far are not enough. A couple of years ago, there were 183,000 live births to adolescent women. That probably accounts for even more young lives, if not stopped by death or injury,” she said.

Hontiveros said she already talked before with telecommunication companies Globe and Smart, who agreed to participate if ever the measure is enacted into law.
