Schizophrenia sufferer Todd McKenzie was shot after a stand-off with police lasting several hours. Under a new program, a mental health professional would have been part of the police response.

At the time of the incident, Assistant Police Commissioner Max Mitchell said that non-lethal tactics were utilised, which included the use of tasers, but they were ineffective and Todd McKenzie was "unfortunately and tragically" shot.

He said the incident came "out of the blue", after Todd had been successfully managing his condition. She said what worked in large cities may need to be changed for smaller regional centres, which operate across much larger areas.

Absolutely tragic. The PACER model is essential, given that 50% of police shooting fatalities in NSW are of people with mental illness. I hope that it is expanded to regional areas too. It’s that...or disarm police. Britain seems to manage with having a separate armed unit.

Is there a link between state governments shoot to kill directives/procedures and their fears of having to accommodate massive compensation settlements that arise from police shootings that cause injury?

Why aren’t white people burning the city down in peaceful protests ?
