Galea targeted the Victorian Trades Hall in Carlton as well as the offices of the Melbourne Anarchist Club in Northcote and the Resistance Centre in the CBD for a possible attack against "lefties". Galea's lawyer, Colin Mandy, argued his client's mental health had been severely impacted by time in custody when, at times, his only face-to-face contact with another person was when a prison guard delivered his meals.
He was allowed to make telephone calls to family interstate, but he had to pay for them himself, which used up a lot of his limited prison earnings, the court heard. That was disputed by Jennifer Hosking from the sentencing management division of the Department of Corrections, who has assessed Galea once a year since he was first admitted in late 2016."I'm not sure he's safe in the main population."But Mr Mandy noted no evidence had been presented to prove there was a threat against his client.
