The Department of Foreign Affairs on Friday reported five new coronavirus disease cases and two new recoveries among Filipinos in the Asia-Pacific and Europe.
This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases among overseas Filipinos to 9,878 as of August 14, 2020. Significantly, no new updates were received from the Americas for the fourth consecutive day.The Middle East/Africa remains as the combined regions with the biggest number of Filipinos afflicted with COVID-19 with a total of 6,889 cases. It is also the twin regions with the most number of deaths at 444.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Consulate General in Xiamen successfully repatriated four land-based Filipinos from Fujian Province in China on Wednesday after several months of waiting due to the existing travel restrictions imposed by the Manila and Beijing governments as a precaution to mitigate the further spread of the pandemic.
The Filipino repatriates were compelled to take the Xiamen-Nanjing-Manila route, a longer trip than usual, due to the absence of direct flights from Fujian Province to the Philippines. Since March 15, 2020, the Philippine government has repatriated a total of 178 Filipinos, including stranded seafarers and students, from Fujian province.
