Coronavirus: Obesity increases risks from Covid-19, experts say

Being obese or overweight puts you at greater risk of serious illness or death from Covid-19, experts say after examining existing studies.

Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England, said the current evidence was clear, that being overweight or obese puts you at greater risk of serious illness or death from Covid-19, as well as from many other life-threatening diseases. The UK has one of the highest levels of obesity in Europe. Almost two-thirds of adults in England are overweight or obese, with similar figures in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The NHS says most adults with a body mass index of 25 to 29.9 are overweight, while those with a BMI of 30 to 39.9 are classed as obese.

Supporting people to achieve and maintain a healthy weight may reduce the severe effects of Covid-19 on the population, especially among vulnerable groups who are most affected by obesity, the report said.

NCDs are a big risk during this lockdown and being completely at home not exercising and not doing any physical activity can harm. The stats shared here are eye opening that we as a public health professional do something for this atleast we should create awareness for this.

Plain Heart trouble take Covid out of the Equastion please

Obesity is the cure 🙄 just like heart disease and diabetes, eating more usually correlates to better health 👍 satire

What about those who are underweight due to poverty or low wage? Are they just as much at risk too or do we not mention that 🙄

Who didn’t know this?

There should have been a cap as to how many fast good chains can open up in a postcode but that would never happen, too much revenue to miss out on.

It’s been proven that obesity puts you at an increased risk of all sorts of serious health problems nobrainer

Dr Alison Tedstone does not appear to be an expert on viruses. What does she know about an causal link between obesity and the severity of covid-19?

Our govt & NHS has moderate clinical risk for severe covid19 & hospitalisation with a BMI of over 40, the US's CDC has BMI over 30 as risk. That is a big weight difference.

I can’t eat anything since I’m in quarantine. I think I have developed a skill against what communities do

Any update on this URGENT investigation BBC

Vice versa

The stealth strategy of blame deflection continues. Yesterday Johnson saying the govt didn't know about asymptomatic transmission (known at end of Jan). Today PHE stating something known for months.

In other news, England giving tories a huge majority at GE & unfettered power where they followed a Herd anti-science agenda increases your risk of covid, death & economic misery.

That's been known for a long time.

It's a good thing the government isn't giving literally everyone fast food vouchers, then. Oh, wait.

What a load of rubbish!! The BMI weight measurement is outdated and a complete farce!! According to this old and antiquated measurement I am overweight with a BMI of 25.5 but I don’t have an ounce of fat on me! I exercise everyday and eat well so are nhs etc saying I’m at risk?

Really? I’d never have thought! 😂

Scientists have been saying this for months

Anything increases the risk! Going by our news a longer finger, a bald head, the colour of your skin, VIT def the list is endless! The effing GOV letting the virus go like wildfire is the biggest problem! Soo much more could have been done!..IMBECILES must be held accountable

Covid clears out blubbery fat fuckers, so what🥮🥮🥮🍺🍺

Your stories are getting worse. Doing the best you can to cling on to the covid fear campaign. Shambles 🤣

Are the BBC fat shaming🤣. I didn't think that fitted with their agenda. Who ever wrote this article will be in trouble.

Bit late aren’t you?

Welcome to since the beginning of humanity. Name one instance where obesity lowers your risk of another disease or infection or virus.

Obesity increases risks in everything.

UK humor at its finest in the thread.( I dint get that mate🤯) Being an average american of average IQ I concur with the experts..being FAT causes any illness to be more severe. Unless your illness is malnutrition...(american humour)

drorydress A) we know B) that was a given C) no shit sherlock

Thank you for the warning.

I honestly find it incredible that the BBC, who i used to defend in arguments, take 4 months to state the bleeding obvious. Doh.

SHOCK NEWS: Ursine animals secretly filmed defecating in tree heavy glades. NEXT: Respiratory virus also kills old people in great numbers too due to their compromised immune system responses

having a selfservinglyingtory government increases risks from covid-19 even more than obesity borismustgo

You can stuff your comments on obesity & your facemasks, where the sun don't shine... while Vile Violent Criminals have funerals attended by hundreds & Vile Marxist BLM/Antifa Terrorists can Riot Loot & Murder in Mass gatherings of thousands 'Supported' by MSM PL F1 etc!

Obese individuals tend to be VitD deficient. VitD is critical for the immune system. See thread 👇🏻 Study in tweet highlighted showed excess weight children diagnosed w/CV19 tended to have lower blood levels of Vit D [25(OH)D].

Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases.. is this a guess for covid-19 , as in this short span of time a proper study couldn’t have been conducted

It seems to me experts will say whatever you want them to say or they don't get a second gig.

I guess the 'salad days' are over...

Obesity increases risk would suffice as a headline..

Oh i heard that being bald also puts you at risk

Glad I ate that 3rd slice of pizza before I read that headline...

No shit

You are about 6 months late on this one. That was one of the earliest indicators of people who got the Chi-Vi.

Obesity word needs to be dropped. Should call them fatties, chubsters and tubbers to shame them into losing weight. They should also be limited to 5 items at supermarkets.

There is nothing wrong with a little FAT shaming! it's a great motivator.

But smoking can reduce risks. I bet they don't reduce the tax on ciggies. Research from La Mancha Uni. Spain.

Well that's me f****d then....

This conclusion does not need so called experts.... even dumbs know it!

Watching BBC news increases risks from Covid-19, experts say

Is this why Americans are dying

Been wondering about this for awhile. It could be another reason why the US is seeing this virus hit alot harder than other countries. Our obesity rates are 40% and another 33% of Americans are overweight. 70%+ Americans at higher risk due to complications from these 2 categories

It’s all a load of bollocks,u don’t know what to believe! 1 minute it’s this next minute it’s that!

So, we’ve had from you the most at risk as follows: White men over 40, smokers, Asian men & women, non-smokers, black men, and now of course, the obese. I think that about covers it .. So basically, we are ALL doomed! Just making it up as you go along. Great work 👍🏼

Fear, more fear

but obesity looks beautiful! u_u and they are soft and cozy 3 sometimes i feel like i love something illegal u_u

If masks, distancing and draconian lockdowns are mandatory to stop a virus and avoid deaths, shouldn’t being in a certain body fat and blood sugar range be too? I know, there are conditions not related to this but how many C19 deaths in under 60’s with no pre existing conditions?

Yet they were overjoyed when they could reduce the price of a big Mac for us.

strike with the big news yet again.

Furlough = do less = gain weight 🤷‍♂️ it’s nobody’s fault it’s just what it is

Lockdown promotes obesity.

O bollocks!

Never mind Covid.....obesity increases the risk of everything, this isn't news, it's stating the obvious

Surely this is obvious, it's a respiratory disease.

And it also increases the risk of dying from just about anything as well.... notnews Although if it makes people do something about it that’s no bad thing (it won’t)

Rubbish

No new news.

Very shortly breathing will be a critical sympoof coronavirus Until the election

Sorry I just see this as a warmed over idea from the Mrs May era. It’s all about putting prices up.

No wonder Boris Johnson was in a spot of bother, the silly pile of gammon rolled in pubes. Really glad he survived, wouldn’t wish death on anyone, but fed up of his nonsense as PM

The only real virus is racism™. 🤤

not me though am built different 💪

Gee...really 🥴. And you just figured this out. Amazing.

More importantly, obesity is a much bigger health risk than COVID-19. People should be trying to lose weight because they care about their overall health, not only because there's a pandemic.

Lockdown increases obesity due to more inactivity. Oh what a tangled web we weave.

What is this?

No sh*t

There goes my fat ass!😀

They are not social distancing

Absolute rubbish . Sprites sew your jeans a couple of mm’s further in every few nights

And many other diseases. What’s new ? Next topic.

Surpoids et covid ne font pas bon ménage.

Breaking: Obesity increases risks in every aspect of your life.

which was established months ago ..

Thought this was obvious, as obesity causes other 'underlying conditions', which has now become an infamous term.

Jorgeguti0428

Fat chance!

Not 🚀 science is it ...

On average, an US citizen is 6kg fatter than an U.K. citizen. And yet the Boris Johnson government plans to lower U.K. food standards to US levels. This is dangerous and needs to be stopped.

Another one

I'm shocked!

From “No Shit” magazine

If this is real most the countries got it !

Well good thing we're all on the stress diet. Ive lost like 30lbs, Thanks Covid!
