‘It’s okay to not be okay’ seems to stop applying when it comes to someone who’s showing difficult symptoms like Kanye’s

West had sought involuntary psychiatric hospitalisation for him, and that he refuses treatment, as well as making other headline-grabbing claims about the family. It’s not my place to talk about Kanye’s specific circumstances or treatment, nor anyone’s, but what I do want to draw attention to is the way we speak about serious mental health problems.

I’m so used to seeing people tweet lines like, ‘It’s okay to not be okay’. Now, it seems clear to me that these phrases relate to more palatable conditions, such as depression and anxiety. The general public can relate to these illnesses, as they’re more common, and chances are you or someone you know has suffered from them.

For me, the hardest bit of having bipolar is when people would say they care, they would tell me they were in my corner – that they were mental health advocates – and then dissociate from me when I needed their support. But mania is so far away from depression. It’s a serious symptom of bipolar and can lead to a lack of impulse control, self-awareness and even losing touch with reality. It isn’t like being the life of the party, or having more confidence and being chattier than normal, which is what a lot of people assume.

Much has been said about the fact that Kanye refuses treatment. It’s easy to think, ‘Why doesn’t he just get help?’ Well, while we don’t know Kanye’s specific circumstances, it’s important to understand that denying help and medication is a sign of mania. I’ve refused to take medication in the past. Both times, the manic episode that was developing caused me to feel incredible and almost euphoric. I didn’t want to give up that feeling and more than that, in my warped way of thinking, I didn’t see anything wrong with it. So I threw my medications out. When someone is so obviously ill, it’s better to show them compassion than start making fun of them, or demonising their actions from when they are manic.

Oh shush. He's thick, egotistical, but not because he's ill. Anyone who knows someone truly ill can see the difference. Just stop before it lets Trump himself off war crimes & dictatorship. Let's face it, most criminals here use the MH excuse every week, and we know them 🙄

People need to watch the whole video and judge for themselves what kanyewest is saying. When someone is speaking passionately about something which is then edited and taken out of context, anyone can sound crazy.
