So many of us do it: the long scroll through grim news on social media before bed. A cognitive behavioral specialist offers advice on how to stop 'doomscrolling' for the sake of your mental health.

"Our minds are wired to look out for threats," she says."The more time we spend scrolling, the more we find those dangers, the more we get sucked into them, the more anxious we get.""Now you look around yourself, and everything feels gloomy, everything makes you anxious. So you go back to look for more information.

You do want to know what's happening in the world, so the solution isn't to never go online again, but it's finding boundaries.Going into it, opening up your phone, reminding yourself why you're there, what are you looking for, what information are you trying to find.

Daniel Hensel and Barrie Hardymon produced and edited the audio for this story. Emma Bowman produced it for the Web.

I’m in a text thread with some friends I live but sometimes it’s all about posting one doom laden news report after another. Then I have to check out for awhile

Stop 'doomscrolling'? How else am I going to get angry enough to do something stupid?

fizapirani Useful tips at a time when screen time has screened.

Cute name.

SwannyGator

Pls make this a pinned tweet.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Great way to describe the state of my notifications feed with UNNewsReader app switched on. I’ve since fixed that, but it would be great to see the occasional switch up from the “end is nigh” approach, just sayin’.

Hahahaha One of the biggest contributors to it posts article on how to unplug from it.... Now I've seen it all.

Ignorance of what's going on in the world in exchange for peace of mind, or remain anxious and pessimistic yet informed. 🤔

It is after 1am, of course I’m doomscrolling 🤦🏾‍♀️

I feel seen

I like to think I am hopescrolling. I’m desperately hoping to see some good news. I’m desperately hoping to see that more people care about each other. I’m hoping to see an end to this dreadful year. It’s very disappointing.

I feel called out.

The liberal media is attacking me

The irony is too much. You are literally creating the doomsday click-bait articles that you condemn.

Maybe YOURE the one “doomscrolling”

Co19Luis interesting.... 😘

Yeesh, you caught me. thx for the new vocabulary word. 'Doomscrolling' is the word of the year.

Hire programmers... Dont pretend they knew what they were doing when I did not reach that area in this plethora of the same idea code generators...

You doom. We scroll. Be thankful for the perfect codependency.

Early on in this Presidency I realized I had to change my behavior: now I stop social media 1 hour before bedtime and switch to a novel (with happy end) or movie or something else that has nothing to do with the current reality.

Jeez, why don’t you just me next time

Guaranteed to boost your mood right here!

I will never stop.

Now I have a name for what I’ve been doing

Let's see if I have the willpower to stop doomscrolling after I leave this comment.

DOOOOOM!

Interesting read.

karenkho already reminds us about this all the time but thanks for looking out NPR!

Guilty!

Maybe doomscrolling wouldn't be such an issue if shit didn't suck so much

F

😂

In general, most search the finality of their existence and project it on a worldly existential scale. We worship a hierarchy when we as a species covet the key to all life's existence. We are animals; who can save every living thing.

No racist twist on this story? You are off your game, NPR.

But I CAN'T get a good night's sleep unless I'm aware of every awful thing that happened today. Can't you understand that?!!? 🥴

I’m not doom scrolling. You’re not paying attention. See the difference?

Don't tell me what to do.

Guilty

It's kind of hard not to doomscroll in 2020.

ADDICTIVE, damn it!

A good audible book helps put you to sleep. Its not like we will have to ever worry about an island where you can see dinosaurs and end up horrible being mauled by a velociraptor.

Maybe.

Just me next time.

This!!!

Ok then. DoomScrolling

NPR encouraging uniformed Americans to stay uniformed - during pandemic and n election year - wtf?

Yes I am. Depressing.

You are freaking me out here....

😩😩😩😩😩😩

It will end when the fascist trump is gone.

I doomscroll, therefore I am.

Next time me you cowards

Literally what I am doing right now. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Also, take that anger you feel and stop being complacent.

Reads, likes, continues doomscrolling.

This is targeted harassment

Doesn't compare to anything David Lynch before bed.

Vote.

That’s why I’ve switched from my Twitter being politically focused to being mentally health solving based... still frustrating but less negative

It doesnt help that NPR propagates panicporn and false narratives about chaos in our country. cancelnpr defundnpr

samsanders

Why you gotta call me out like that?

SwageTank

Step 1: stop reading NPR. Step 2: repeat step 1.

I'm guilty of this, but I try to make Kindle my last app open each night. Reading a good book helps me find hope even when it seems thin on the ground in nonfiction.

The only thing that works is going to bed under 20% battery.

SamGodwell Good advice

it's bc the media has abdicated their position and we have to find knowledge elsewhere. try not serving fascism, hacks

For every 30 minutes I 'doomscroll', I spend 30 minutes watching cute puppy videos. It's called balance.

NatalieDeRatt DoomScrolling

1. Defund NPR

I called it 'CRUISIOSITY' *(From cruise + curiosity)* Because it isn't just before bedtime but 'at all the time' that I do 'IT'! Everyone, hi?, ought admitting so, too, no? nycsouthpaw drsanjaygupta sarahcpr juliaioffe JuliaDavisNews

vorbis you coined this term I believe

That's what they want us to do. Is to be in chaos. There is always something. It's their way of keeping control. I personally feel like they plan things on the side, while they keep us chaotic. These hidden agendas, and repeating history is getting f****** old.

While I appreciate the advice for maintaining our mental health I don’t think I have the luxury of just ignoring the multiple crises happening right now. Ignoring a problem doesn’t make it go away, and there are opportunistic types that look to take advantage of apathy.

While doomscrolling, I read an article about doomscrolling.

I need this

i don't mind, cause after I'm done doom scrolling, i take a look at my cup of chocky take a sip and laugh it all off. babyyodastyle

I hear that, but the problem is you leave your post on Twitter and before you know it, our brothers and sisters are being abducted by federal agents. So, yes, psychological hit for the team. 3.5 months.

tip 1: revolution; fix the underlying issues of doom by overthrowing the corrupt and incompetent rulers of this system

'Doomscrolling' is the word de guerre distraction made up by people who would rather ignore our long-standing problems than face the fact that people all over the world are ENRAGED by the inequality these problems perpetuate.

Follow all the animal and funny accounts. Mute the most offensive.

Hope we get to a be calm if s386 is passed.

Whats funny is its mostly ‘adults’, haha yall got real fucked up with the addition to information! Didnt even think that the algorithms dont give a fuck about your health.

Step 1 - Stop reading NPR. defundNPR

Doomscrolling also leads to the urge to post negative comments on social media because it’s an outlet to vent. Which often makes social media an unpleasant place to be. 😬 Vicious circle.

Hunh..... Guilty as charged...

Say prayers INSTEAD Y'ALL !!!

Too late, we’ve known this since the dawn of the iPhone

Good news! Almost all kids do not catch or transmit the virus, so schools should open.

Hey, I just listened to this twelve hours ago on the radio!

It would be great if the media could stop
