California Gov. Gavin Newsom defended his reopening decisions and adopted the same argument made by many critics of his original order: The consequences of the COVID-19 shutdown for the economy and mental health were too great to ignore.

again described the thresholds as the “ability to test, contact trace, isolate, and support the exposed.” Among the key measures to move into Stage 2 were “sufficient testing capacity to meet demand” and “contact tracing capacity statewide.”in early May, he called it a “very positive sign” that happened for only one reason: “Data says it can happen.”

Weeks later, as cases climbed, the governor defended his reopening decisions and adopted the same argument made by many critics of his original order: The consequences of the COVID-19 shutdown for the economy and mental health were too great to ignore. Ghaly said hospitalizations and the rate of positives cases in the state had flattened at the time and officials were prepared to reinstitute changes if necessary. He said California had been able to conduct sufficient tests and could not have predicted that “big national lab companies were going to re-experience really extreme testing turnaround time problems, which is what we’ve seen over the past two to three weeks now.

Erika Jenssen, the deputy health services director for Contra Costa County, said the county’s testing and contact tracing remains a work in progress. When the county received authority from the state last month to reopen more businesses, it wrote on its attestation form that it had not yet met the state’s requirement of 15 contact tracers per 100,000 residents.

Both Contra Costa and Marin counties have developed systems in which tests for high-risk cases, such as those tied to nursing homes or other dangerous outbreaks, are sent to government labs that process results more quickly and lower priority cases are directed to commercial labs with longer turnarounds.

peterbakernyt Could it be that he felt rushed, especially when Elon Musk started violating the lockdown?

JonathanLanday While I like Newsom, he really made a grave error by not mandating masks when exercising, etc. and rushing to open up non-essential businesses. This isn't an inconsequential error. People are going to pay with their lives. The town next to mine went from 200 to 2000 cases.

BoycottLATimes. The news is favorable to trump and gop.

The protestors destroyed California's opening.

MrJonCryer While I think he was wrong to reopen, we weren’t exactly shutdown since people are out there just doing whatever they want anyway. The idiots who ignore Covid warnings are the real villains in this story.

What a disappointment.

Has any ' News Source' asked Newsom what peer reviewed scientific studies he is using to make these decisions?

peterbakernyt That’s right, and now lockdowns and closure are our new way! Guidelines- 14 days of a continuous decline in the curve!! Hello does anyone play by the rules or guidelines anymore?

Several hundred vehicles seen this morning lined around the stadium waiting 2 to 3 hours to be tested. Unemployment checks to stop next week, employers are requesting employees to provide negative test results to return to work.

MrJonCryer

He had to. In cities like Bakersfield, they were ignoring it all and opening up anyway. So he opened. Which the entire state of California demanded. And protested for. And now you all are mad at him?!

peterbakernyt LAs dashboard is also embarrassing. Claimed they are doing 100% contact tracing despite it being impossible with the amount of tracers they have. Said they were meeting metrics to reopen when cases were growing exponentially

GavinNewsom this you?

Trying to do the right thing in the face of real pressure is what sets apart good leaders from the mediocre. I wonder what Gov Brown would have done? (Good Leader)

Lol Newsom is such a clown

Yeah, we know, we complained about you not reporting on this a month ago
