The security officer who held a lady physician hostage at the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) on Wednesday morning (July 1) has tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

This was confirmed by Quezon City Police District Director Brig. Gen. Ronnie Montejo on Friday morning , according to a DZBB report.

Five police personnel who helped arrest the hostage taker are also under quarantine to monitor their health status. According to Montejo, Hilarion Achondo, 51, who held Dr. Russel Carandang hostage, was tested last week for COVID-19 after experiencing difficulty breathing. His test result yielded a positive result.

Following the confirmation of the suspect’s test result, Dr. Willie Saludares, head of EAMC’s emergency room trauma department, said they are considering whether there is a need for Dr. Carandang and the medical workers who attended to Achondo to be placed under quarantine.“‘Yung pinagdalhan sa pasyente, ‘yun po ang aming COVID-19 emergency room. So lahat po ng suspect doon po dinadala, so lahat ng tauhan namin doon, naka-complete PPE.
