Victoria's Deputy Chief Health Officer said people are at risk of becoming infected if they don't wash their hands after handling chickens or if they eat raw or under-cooked eggs.

The Victorian Health Department is urging owners of backyard chickens to observe safe handling practices, following a surge in salmonella infections.Families with small flocks of backyard chickens need to be aware of safe handling practices to minimise the chances of becoming sick

The Department has been advised of nine cases of salmonella over the past two months — five of them in people who had contact with chickens or ate eggs from household flocks. "Kids love touching the chickens and playing with them — but they need to be supervised when they're around chickens and avoid cuddling or kissing the chickens.""You shouldn't use cracked, damaged or heavily-soiled eggs," she said.

"This is deep inside the egg, so it's really important that you cook eggs properly, particularly for this type of salmonella," she said.Dr Bone said vulnerable people such as infants, the elderly, and those with medical conditions which weaken their immune system should be especially cautious.

slsandpet Perhaps they shouldn't be eating the unfertilised embryos of another species.

Normal hygiene practices and washing eggs before refrigerating works in this house.

🥺

You know salmonella comes from reptiles right? Hence it was probably introduced from food scraps not the backyard. Every household should have a minimum of 2 chooks and we'd cut down on landfill and have 0 cage farms which are salmonella breeding grounds.

Ahhh.. the Victorians and their infectious diseases...

Quarantine the chickens

How good is organic

Oh go away 2020.

NEVER EVER use the same food preparation surface for both raw and cooked chicken meat.
