As a surge in single-use plastic from food deliveries and online shopping has become evident during the community quarantine, a health specialist on Thursday appealed to all sectors to make a concerted effort to provide solutions to the waste disposal problems in the country.

A recent joint statement by 115 scientists from 18 countries cited the safe use of reusable bags, containers, and refill systems amid fears of virus transmission.

Dr. Geminn Apostol, one of the signatories to the said statement and Lead Environmental Health Specialist at the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health, explained that reusables offer more sustainable packaging solutions and are easier to clean with soap and water or even with common approved household disinfectants.

However, he said observing physical distancing and limiting outdoor activities remain to be the most cost-effective measure to avoid transmission of the coronavirus disease . While there are safe disposal solutions to COVID-19 related waste, such as medical waste autoclaves, the environmental advocates and health experts said the best way to ensure personal and environmental health is the rational use of PPEs and a shift to reusables.
