Doctors and nurses across NSW public hospitals were forced to treat patients without access to their electronic medical records after a major outage knocked out the entire network for several hours.

Hospital corridors were abuzz with rumours the system had been knocked out by a cyber attack, following Prime Minister Scott Morrison's warning that critical infrastructure was being targeted by aThe Sydney Morning Herald Other doctors reported they were still not able to access electronic records or their emails after 2pm. They warned that switching to paper medication charts was highly risky for patients whose medical history was logged electronically and inaccessible.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department of Customer Service said a "power issue" had impacted a number of government systems, in particular NSW Health and Service NSW.
