Sports key in maintaining health in COVID-19 battle for many Singaporeans: SportSG survey via yahoosg

SINGAPORE — Sports has not taken a backseat in Singapore during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, Singaporeans are taking ownership of their health and wellness to combat the coronavirus.

During the two-month COVID-19 circuit breaker period in April and May, regular sports participation dipped as programmes were suspended and facilities were closed. Aiding the disrupted sports sectorNonetheless, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused much disruption within the sports sector. To this end, the Ministry for Culture, Community and Youth and SportSG have reached out to over 500 companies and over 10,000 sports sector freelancers in recent months to better understand their challenges.

More than 900 temporary jobs have already be created for sports sector professionals whose livelihoods have been affected – an expansion from the initial batch of 500 jobs. The majority of the positions have been filled for sports centres, as well as more specialised roles in the ActiveSG Academies and Clubs, High Performance Sports and digital development.
