Judge deems weekend protests unlawful | Sky News Australia

Protesters have been denied the right to march in Sydney this weekend, with the Supreme Court finding the rally unlawful. Two rallies were set to go ahead this weekend, with the first a Black Lives Matter protest on Friday night. Organisers of the event didn’t hand any of the relevant paperwork into police within the required seven days, which automatically deemed the event unlawful.

The organisers of the pro-refugee rally did submit their paperwork, but the police referred the matter to the Supreme Court, arguing the event broke public health orders amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Supreme Court ultimately deemed the protest unlawful, ruling it could not go ahead. After the decision was handed down, NSW Police Minister David Elliott said common sense prevailed.
