Guardian investigation and survey also finds situation is causing significant health risk

The ongoing closure of many public toilets across the UK is having a serious impact on wellbeing, limiting people’s capacity to exercise freely or visit loved ones, and creating a significant secondary public health risk as people have no option but to relieve themselves in the open, a Guardian survey and investigation has found.

Anxiety among who? The people? What the fuck are they doing out in public?

OMG! Toilet access is THE worst in London. And restaurants don't like to let you use the loo so it's crazy!

Do you guys even have public toilets? 🤭

This is condemning people with bladder and bowel issues to confinement at home, having suffered from this I can say how painful and debilitating this is.

MissFionaG Especially for those with IBD, Crohns, colitis.

Stay home then.

Why are they closed? Makes no sense.

'Pints to go' is an absolute joke. The high street around the corner from me (SW London) has been turned into a linear pub. No distancing and obviously no toilet facilities. Maximum 10 people at a funeral but you can have as many as you like at the outdoor wake apparently

I've got a disabled 5 year old and I'm not complaining, so I would be grateful if all whiners shut up.

Probably the only place we don't need to be told to keep 2 m apart.

What’s a public toilet? Is that something from the olden days 🤔

And soiled underlinen.

All the toilet bandits must be in shock.🤣

Believe me there is more vital contagion and bad bacteria in those filthy masks you're wearing. And spraying your good bacteria away every 5 seconds or limiting your lung capacity is not helping you

Been there, what do they expect people to do when in public?

Oooh, now so glad I am confined to barracks. It must be hell out there.

Many towns closed them as they were homosexual meeting places! Where many a married man shagged another bloke in secret. Rancid!

What doesn’t cause anxiety these days...?

Let's not open these massive vectors of transmission. There are plenty of bushes.

To all the guys who go cottaging🤔

Especially amongst women of a certain age. What with the HRT shortages they should REALLY watch their backs!

This story is a pile of 💩

no change there

Mail the waste to your MPs anonymously as a complaint

I have cancelled my 'donation' to you because of your links to slavery.

Yeah motherfuckers

The Guardian was founded in 1821 by John Edward Taylor who traded in cotton produced by the slaves of the American south. Ban the Guardian for historic slave links!

Public toilets were a cornerstone of the Victorian health revolution. They lived and thrived in a time of serious disease. We are their idiot offspring.

What a load of piss.

There’s plenty of other discrete areas to do your dogging

This needs to be resolved ASAP - wouldn't have been possible for my late dad, who had MS, to go out at all in the absence of accessible toilets, & lots of people are affected as in the article 🚽🚾

The lack of toilet facilities is a sign of how apathetic the public is. Councils no longer want to pay for the upkeep of toilets because the government has reduced the money they get. The Tories just want to outsource everything even if it means people pissing in the street.

nikkicrowley1 releavant to today’s outing!!!

For people like myself with a disability and need to use toilets without warning, this is distressing. Are we supposed to not go out? Or are we just supposed to soil ourselves

If that’s what you call it.

So the shops open = more people about....where can people who need it urgently go? My daughter has an over active bladder and genuinely can’t wait. Just open them with good supply of hand wash/gel? Cleaners monitoring them closely..it’s not that challenging is it?!?

And there we go: waiting for the deployment of handcuffs

Expectation of few to be out and about due to restrictions.

And then they complain when people sh*t in the bushes - what did they expect, everyone wearing diapers?

People, get a grip on reality. You have thousands of deaths. Public toilets are the least of your worries!

It’s not fair of local councils to force local business to take in the general public to use their facilities. It’s been going on like this forever because of a stupid shortage of council owned and run facilities. It shouldn’t fall to local businesses to provide toilets for all

owenhatherley did a great article for the LRB on how important public toilets are as a social good, particularly for those with physical disabilities or no permanent home/ job site

This has been a problem when out on long cycles rides but found out that ALL Pret A Manger coffee shops are open. They were allowed to stay as they were supplying the NHS staff & feeding the homeless with what was left over at the end of the day. Will be using Pret from now on👍

This is actually a serious issue. We need more public conveniences and they need to be open now. We have a serious shortage of clean, accessible public loos. It disadvantages everyone. Investment!

Yeah. I can smell it around the city.

Imagine how trans people are gonna feel in a couple of months thanks to Liz Truss

Not to mention a damp gusset 😳

JUST LIKE SanFrancisco AND NYC WELCOME TO 3RDWORLD CITIES WHO'S IN CHARGE -- GET THEM OUT!! POWER TO THE PEOPLE! -- ALL OF US!

And pain, I would assume.

And Unfortunately the sole use for many a long distance commuter, is those outlets with the clown and golden arches are closed as well.

But if open and folks caught the virus they would be saying the same and blaming the councils and operators of the toilets.

This problem is covered in the BBC Radio 4 programme about angry people with bladder problems: Cross Incontinents.

Does England have public toilets? I could never find one, I assumed all Englishmen just piss in the streets

Why don't we have more public toilets in the US

obviously a terrible inconvenience...

What’s a public toilet? 🤔
