Calls for urgent legislative change in New South Wales have this week been met with a promise to implement changes after a lethal mix-up in medical gas pipes at Bankstown hospital resulted in the death of a newborn baby and another suffering severe brain damage.
"You have other people who are not even plumbers doing it because there is no legal requirement for you to have a qualification of any sort."Currently in New South Wales, those who install medical gas are not required to hold any form of license or qualification, or even receive training. In 2015, an upgrade at the hospital meant new medical gas lines were installed – but one line labelled as oxygen was instead connected to a tank of nitrous oxide.
This was no freak accident – it was the fault of contractor Christopher Turner, who was paid to install the gas lines. Upon completing the job in 2015 he signed official paperwork claiming he had tested the gas outlets when he hadn't.Despite the fact the negligent act resulted in the death of one child and brain damage to another, Turner's punishment was a $100,000 fine. When doctors put an oxygen mask on little Amelia, no one knew there had been a deadly gas mix up.
MP Buttegieg is fighting alongside the Khan family for change and wants New South Wales to require those who install medical gas to be licensed and trained.
Actually not incident should mean disgrace horrible sad shocking
There are people building homes with little experience let alone this incident yet the government does nothing it has to stop now
This is murder & should be dealt with accordingly...yet he only gets a $100k fine!!🤬🤬
This has happened before! I remember in the late noughties something similar happening to newborns, with disastrous consequences. How hard is it for the installers to do their jobs and check properly?
