Many of the 10,000 Black Lives Matter protesters wore masks and gloves while marching in Melbourne, but many did not follow health advice to stay 1.5 metres apart.

Victorian health officials say it could be at least a week before it is known whether Saturday's Black Lives Matter protest caused COVID-19 to spread in the community.Deputy Chief Health Officer Annaliese van Diemen says authorities are monitoring for cases linked to the protestFour new coronavirus infections were recorded in Victoria overnight

Gatherings of more than 20 people are banned in Victoria under the Chief Health Officer's directives andHealth officials and political leaders had called for the protest to be called off due to fears of coronavirus spreading."Those gatherings do present a risk and we are aware of that risk and we will continue to monitor … for any further cases as a result of that," Deputy Chief Health Officer Annaliese van Diemen said.

"In terms of potential outbreaks in relation to the protest, it really will be at least a week and probably closer to two weeks before we have an idea about whether there's been any transmissions or outbreaks related to that," Dr van Diemen said. "We are reviewing footage, gathering evidence and expect to take enforcement action against several organisers in due course," the spokesperson said.'Quietly hopeful' Victoria is tracking well

Science is becoming more political

Who will be responsible?

I went to the Penrith Plaza this morning. No social distancing and very few masks to be seen. The Coffee Club was packed with four to a table in some instances. Many hundreds of people wandering through the Plaza. I presume this is the same in other major shopping centres.

Way to go sheeple

Fake news ABC. Defund this propaganda machine.

Don’t worry! Schools have gone back and pubs have opened.

Need a week to make up some figures and scare everyone do they?

what about the thousands of people out and about at shopping centres, or community markets where there is no social distancing. BlackLivesMatterAustralia

If people die and the infection traced back to the protests, will the organisers be charged auspol2020 auspol

Just in about enough time to see if infection rates warrant a fast and full economic reopening, including allowing attendance at the footy.

Given the anti lockdown rallies (where attendees had no PPE and weren’t physically distancing) resulted in no major increase in cases - I’m sure these rallies where almost everyone was masked and where distancing was practiced will have the same outcome.

The shopping centres were busy no social distancing, no masks

And if there is no spike all restrictions must go as its shows there is zero point having them

But its caused convulsive wailing and pants wetting amongst right wing commentators!

And 9it it is nothing then these cretins premiers best not ask anything else of us again in history. They have lost consent after allowing the far left mass gatherings when we sacrificed so much.

Hopefully we've done enough to mitigate the worst of it seeing as these people totally disregard the safety of the general populous for a questionable political movement.

No but the impact of returning kids to full time school, and using public transport to get to and from school, that should start showing up in the figures (NSW at least) as of tomorrow.

The protest is already forgotten but the irresponsible impacts could linger and kill for months or years.

Impacts of restrictions being lifted more likely.

What about from schools, shopping centres, pubs, cafes? Will that be a week or so too, or only the marches

But, we wouldn't have needed these protests if the Government had done the right thing to address deaths in custody.

Most of the outbreaks happen in schools anyway.

It will be harmful to society, especially disabled, sick & elderly. (Their lives don't matter, apparently). It will also harm their own cause too, as future deaths from Covid-19 will be placed at their feet. All for some indulgent Facebook selfies.

By then, who knows, hope it blows up in palaszazuk's face, showed no guts to handle that rabble, just not fair to the people who do follow protocol

Impact of protest on racism spread won’t be known for at least a week ...

Apparently the CCPVirus only infects certain types of people.

“Suck and see ....” The PM that says Free speech, Governments who says don’t do it and don’t punish them the people and organisers who attended properly with hefty fines and jail time! In others words let them do it with a little fine and let’s see what happens after!!!!

Perspective; transmission is more likely indoors. Whilst 10,000 gathered in street, wearing masks, on the same day probably 60,000 were mingling indoors at Westfield Bondi and another 100,000+ at Westfield CBD (most w/out masks). That's just 2 centres. So who do we pepper-spray?

😱😱😱😱I worry for the Indigenous people there who are more susceptible. Having said that, I fully understand why they are protesting.

Back to work everyone, open your business to what ever level you like. No more restrictions on numbers. Open the borders business as usual

Let them die

That almost goes without saying.

O great........ Unpacking is just the best

Lets have a think about this. One death in custody every month since 1991 and 100 deaths in 2 months from COVID with 7000 odd ill. Going onto the streets could spread COVID and rack up deaths to match deaths in custody. How will that serve justice?

Thanks all those that attended and may take Covid-19 back to schools, child care, hospitals, aged care facilities and your families.and friends

And the Granny deaths are on you ABC! You promoted protest in the middle of a pandemic. Family's who loses loved ones from covid should be able to hold the government and the ABC responsible and seek compensation.

Oh well they Governments let them do it, meanwhile bars & restaurants have to work through laws and have a restriction of trade,it would seem after yesterday’s walk in the park. The world knows they were petrified if they put a stop to it what the outcome might have been.

Blah blah blah if people didnt go out and protest they would've gone out shopping/drinking anyway. Virus cases would've increased through easing of restrictions, protest or no protest. But propaganda and demonising leftist politics is more fun, ay

Expect padded statistics from the states involved

I can’t believe many people ignore the risk of coronavirus spreading ,keep social distance and go home please

Why don't you visit my small rural town ? Over this long weekend it is ridiculously crowded with visitors with very little social distancing, not a mask in sight. Will you worry about possible coronavirus spead here? I'm guessing not. I wonder why.

Unless supermarkets, casinos, cafes and schools are also policed- it will be a false equivalency to conflate a spike in covid with the protests AboriginalLivesMatter BlackLivesMatterAustralia COVID19

But peak hour on public transport won't infect you, crowded shopping centres 'help the economy'. Morrison wanted us to 'bounce back'. And we did.

How will they differentiate any protester impacts from impacts from markets, shopping centers, weekend travel, etc, etc? Protesters, judging from pics, were largely wearing masks. Hardly anyone at the shops is. And people certainly aren't observing distance requirements.

Just in time for the hillsong convention

Thank you for putting our parents and grandparents in danger of dying from the coronavirus, I hope what you did was worth it ...And if you’re interested Donald Trump is very proud of you ...

not what you fullas were promoting yesterday. Now you want another total shut down.

Everyone that attends should get a thousand dollar fine and a week in jail.

That'll teach 'em.

In 1 week if nothing happens, we'll know the politicians, the so called 'experts' lied & police appallingly violated human rights of civilians. More importantly, can get rid of the oppressive draconian rules permanently & States should be held accountable for damage caused.

Doesn't matter anymore. Restrictions are gone now that there is a precedent.😎👍

Schools are immunity zones - maybe protests are too?

You can be sure a bunch of cases will magically appear... They'll be like the Rockhampton, Qld case.

You never know your luck 🤞🤞, vermin eradication for free is rather nice.

How many of you are starting to realize who the real racists are in America... Hint... It’s not who the media keeps telling you is racist..

Vulnerable indigenous Australians ‘encouraged’ to put themselves in harms way. Disgrace.

W people have made their decision, people rather fight for justice and live in a world of corona than to live in a world with no carona but suffer injustice!

Regardless, the vast majority of Australians sacrificed 8 weeks of isolation, social distancing, restricted movement, business closures, job loses etc and these morons have just made that whole sacrifice worthless.

I think peaceful protesting is good but I'm worried

Guaranteed spike in cases in a couple of weeks. There will be a large amount of sick deros spreading the disease back into communities who were just beginning to get back on their feet.

This is like a man wants to have sex with a woman in her period. Can't you just wait for a few days?!!

Wonder why none of this analysis when the conspiracy theorists were marching a few weeks ago? 🤔

Why weren’t police wearing masks and why didn’t they allow social distancing in central station?

We will soon know if this whole thing was one giant hoax.
