The thought of leaving his family and beloved bush block in Broome broke his heart, but earlier this year, as he grew weaker and sicker, a breakthrough came."It meant the world to me.Critical breakthroughMr Puertollano represents a breakthrough in Indigenous health in northern Australia. Now, for the first time, there is the capacity to locally treat the growing number of people with kidney failure.It is thanks to a $97 million boost from the State Government, increasing the number of people that can be treated in the Kimberley by a third."It's taken over 10 years for us to get to this point where no-one has to go to Perth for treatment," she said.

He is affectionately known at the Broome renal clinic as "the best needler in the Kimberley" due to his ability to put patients at ease and find a hidden vein."I started off as a driver here 15 years ago, and I never thought I'd get into nursing," Mr Edgar said.
