The body of medical student Sibusiso Qongqo (30) will finally be brought home on July 2, two months after he died in Cuba, Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane announced during a virtual legislature meeting on Thursday

But Qongqo’s sister, Phiwokuhle, told City Press that the family was not impressed after being initially told by the provincial government that there was no money to repatriate Qongqo’s remains.

The family raised the issue after health MEC Sindiswa Gomba letter last month suggested to the family that his body should be cremated because government did not have money to repatriate the remains.

In part, Gomba said she deemed it “necessary to clarify relevant policy matters involved and how the department would approach the tragic event”. “Given the financial difficulties faced by our country and government, these costs will simply not be affordable,” Gomba said. “Secondly, the Cuban practices and traditions of management of the deceased persons differ from South African ways, in that they [Cubans] do not keep bodies for extended periods, hence such huge costs.
