Health minister Dr Zwelini Mkhize has moved to allay fears that a shortage of testing kits and a backlog at labs will hamper government’s efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Health minister Zweli Mkhize said the numbers of Covid-19 tests which could be conducted were reliant on procurement of testing kits from outside the country's borders amid international demand.Health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has moved to allay fears that a shortage of testing kits and a backlog at labs will hamper government’s efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The Western Cape remains the epicentre with 23,583 cases. The Eastern Cape is now second with 4,324 cases, Gauteng has 4,276 and KwaZulu-Natal has 2,637 cases. “This [clinical management] means the doctor who is looking after the patient makes a judgment call, and the test generally becomes a supplementary support for the doctor.

"We are clarifying the guidelines for anyone who is awaiting test results so they do not compromise their community.
