WHO expects to have 'reaction' to Trump letter later

The World Health Organization says it has no immediate comment on a letter from US President Donald Trump, but expected to have "more clarity" and a reaction later in the day.

The US suspended funding to the WHO in mid-April, accusing it of being too close to China and covering up and mismanaging the coronavirus pandemic.He informed the director-general that "if the World Health Organization does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the World Health Organization permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization".

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus acknowledged there had been shortcomings and told the virtual assembly yesterday he welcomed calls for a review. "In an apparent attempt to conceal this outbreak, at least one member state made a mockery of their transparency obligations, with tremendous costs for the entire world," said Mr Azar, pointing the finger at China.

Mr Trump has accused the WHO of blindly taking the word of China, where the SARS-CoV-2 virus was first detected.

WHO could do with some reform....On 29th Feburary they were advising governments no need for travel ban from countries with the virus....2 months after they were first made aware of the virus by China....We got our first case on 29th February probably from Italy...

So he slashed funding to the CDC, scrapped PREDICT which Obama had set up specifically to prevent pandemics, slashed funding to global health initiatives, and now that the inevitable has happened his response is to slash WHO’s budget? It’s almost like he gets to keep the cash.

I can just see this letter, most likely written in crayon, and starting off with “Deer hoo....”

Most of the people who are critical of Trump’s letter to the WHO have not read it.
