Senegal provides every new COVID-19 patient with a hospital or health center bed where they stay isolated and observed — no matter how mild the symptoms. Their contacts spend 2 weeks quarantined in a hotel room, with meals provided.

As people watch, they chime in on Facebook with emoji-laden comments:"Almost 1,000 sick, that is scary ...."49 recovered"..."It's time for us to learn how to live with COVID-19 as we do with malaria, HIV, hypertensions. if not it will be a catastrophe. We cannot rest at our homes anymore. Two months is too long."

Senegal set up its Health Emergency Operation Center , in December 2014, in response to the Ebola outbreak spreading in nearby countries. At the start of this year, the center had some 23 staff members – five of them doctors. "The first issue was to find beds for eventual cases," Bousso says. For the first step his team and partners added 500 beds, mostly in existing health-care facilities. By early May they had upped that to 900 new beds in health centers and hospitals, with another 300 beds for milder cases in hotels. The plan is to scale up by another 700 beds dedicated to COVID-19 patients by the end of May.

These vast preparations and quick actions were also needed because Senegal's health infrastructure is not adequate and could be easily overwhelmed. According to WHO, there are an estimated 7 physicians per 100,000 people.

Does the US have the worst COVID response in the world?

Senegal is clearly not behaving like a ShitHoleCountry so realDonaldTrump please explain?

USA can learn a thing or two from these country!

Hey, realDonaldTrump , take a note. This is how you fight a plague.

Which company runs their healthcare system and hospitals?

Africa is so much more prepared than any of the European countries were. And America? WOW!

Obviously the USA and the Trump regime can learn a lot from Senegal, a nation that is doing so much more for it's people with few resources, than the USA, that does little with too much.

Given that the US doesn't have free healthcare, it wasn't far fetched to imagine that Americans would be worse off than other nations. Even Cuba has free healthcare. And so do the nondemocratic oppressive regimes in the Gulf.

Senegal is also using the Hydrocychloroquine azithromycin zinc treatment with great results

And America does not. Which is the s***hole country?

Here we are getting smoked by Senegal. Are we great again yet?

That will never happen here, because they would have to give a damn about us first.

It’s amazing how many “shithole” countries are handling this virus like a boss. I’m glad they’re putting realDonaldTrump to the ultimate shame.

Wow. And the GD United States of bleeping America can’t get their shit together.

Because they care about their citizens.

But but but their economy!!!

SENEGAL OF ALL COUNTRIES? WITH A GDP OF UNDER $2K / CAPITA? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

How smart is that. Of all countries not to have any plan, who thought it would be us?

It's not perfect the article rightfully points out their missteps but considering when they started they had such a small number of ICU beds to what they have now I am impressed.

Mashallah! Ironically it is now USA who can learn from a nation that has less resources and more class when it comes to taking care of their people. People are the ones that either suffer or prosper based on their govt responses. Sad that my fellow Americans are suffering. Shame.

Meanwhile in North Carolina we're still being told not to go into a hospital unless we're on the literal verge of death from not being able to breath.
