The World Health Organisation is unwilling even to talk about Taiwan's exemplary handling of the covid-19 pandemic

THERE IS an island 180km off the coast of China. Its democratically elected leaders say they run a country called the Republic of China. To the Communist government in Beijing the island is “Taiwan, China” or “Taiwan Province, China”. International organisations, desperate not to offend either side, struggle to name it at all—many opt for the deliberately ambiguous “Chinese Taipei”, after its capital city.

Taiwan is not a member of the WHO. Between 2009 and 2016, when a China-friendly government held power in Taiwan, it attended assembly meetings as an observer. But since then it has been prevented from participating, at China’s behest. America and New Zealand have backed its bid to attend this year, but the assembly will only extend an invitation if a majority of the WHO’s 194 members vote in favour on May 18th.

With the DPP in control again, China is unwilling to make any such concessions. Since 2016 it has been using carrots and sticks to persuade Taiwan’s few remaining diplomatic allies to switch sides. Seven countries have done so, leaving only 15 that still recognise the Republic of China. The holdouts include eSwatini, Nicaragua and the Vatican.

WHO can help? 🇨🇳 China has failed. All schools in China are still closed. Hubei、Heilongjiang、Jilin provinces still break out new local cases from time to time. 🇹🇼 All schools、fabs in Taiwan are still keeping open. No new local cases for 35 days.

Because the problem between Taiwan and China is not a US or rest of the world problem. Buzz off unless you’re either Chinese or ChineseTaiwanese.

It's time for the world to recognize Taiwan. Enough bullying by China.

Member countries should withdraw their funds and demand comprehensive reform from top to bottom. WHO also allows Taiwan to participate on request. There is no reason to exclude 23 million Taiwanese simply because China does not like it.

if that is true, FUCK china

When Taiwan shows their effort & success in fighting the virus. When they are actually not ruling by CCP China. Why WHO still blocking them as part of the world & a contributor in anti-epidemic? This is unreasonable in terms of public health. Only reason fit is China's propaganda

Got to give the taiwanese credit their “scrappy”.

Certainly, The Economist will support Taiwan of China.

Looking back, UN Resolution 2758 looks to have been a monumental and deadly error.

All eminent countries should support Taiwan in WHO , China can't behave like Bully TweetForTaiwan WhiteHouse

Because...

IMO, this is an open goal for Biden. Come out fast in support of Taiwan. Use his knowledge of foreign relations to nail on Trump on details.

As nonsensical as Scotland getting it

Taiwan is free, China is communist.

Merkel?! Their diplomat didn’t have guts to thank Taiwan for the help! TweetForTaiwan

chinese bastards is not enough their ChineseVirus

And India will give Taiwan an Observer status once we become chief of WHO in this month

China is the gravest threat to our world.

WHO is a place of corruption in China. Member countries should withdraw their funds and demand comprehensive reform from top to bottom. WHO also allows (Taiwan) to participate on request. There is no reason to exclude 23 million Taiwanese simply because (China) does not like it.

bullshit magazine!

Chinese hegemony !!!

When China with their treatment of Uyghar Muslims is on the UN peacekeeping force, do we need any more proof of just how far the institutional control is entrenched?

Early in January 2020 Taiwan alerted WHO to the WUHAN VIRUS infecting humans. Their alert was disregarded by WHO’S Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Maybe UK should set a good example by letting Northern Ireland become independent?

California, US and a small town in the UK are also doing a great job, but do you think the WHO have time to go through with each state of the US, or each city of the UK?

Organisation=Organization? Recognise=Recognize? Economist=Economist?

This is because WHO is in a romantic bed with China. So the outcome of their love affair will make it almost impossible for Taiwan to be recognized on the international stage.

Do an article on how much Millions Taiwan saves by not joining an inept and corrupt body called WHO

WHO knows only China...

Wonder why. Could they be afraid of Communist China

Because over the years Beijing has actually put in people that are loyal to them in almost every position of international organizations. Not just the WHO, Beijing was put as head of UN Human Rights council, despite being only slightly above North Korea in human rights.

Wait, is the Economist finding a pair?
