Many local health departments across the U.S. are falling short of the number of people needed to track down the contacts of people who test positive for coronavirus. AP_Christina

In this Wednesday, May 13, 2020 photo, Meghan Peck works on contact tracing at the Florida Dept. of Health in Miami-Dade County, during the new coronavirus pandemic, in Doral, Fla. In state after state, the local health departments charged with doing the detective work of running down the contacts of coronavirus patients are falling well short of the number of people needed to do the job.

With 2.7 million residents and roughly 100 to 300 new COVID-19 cases a day, Miami-Dade County has 175 people tracking down people who were potentially exposed to the virus. Officials in Cook County, which has the highest number of cases in Illinois outside of Chicago, have said they need at least 200 additional contact tracers and as many as 400 to supplement the work of the 29 currently on staff. Illinois has maintained a statewide stay-at-home order since late March, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker has said the state needs a “massive statewide contact tracing operation.”

Contact tracing was one of the “core state preparedness responsibilities” outlined in the White House guidelines for reopening the country, but governors have been pressing ahead with lifting restrictions without having comprehensive programs in place. During congressional testimony this past week, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, that parts of the U.S. might be easing restrictions too early without having the ability to respond effectively to an increase in cases with “good identification, isolation and contact tracing.”

_Christina probably because using manpower for this particular area is very stupid. it is of course hard to scale trash. trust me.

_Christina Good.

_Christina Out side of 3 states in the northeast- The rest of the country is doing fine unless you are a control freak politician Focus on the northeast

_Christina Less than .1% chance of a healthy person dying from it? Fuck contact tracing for this nothing burger.

_Christina Define a 'person's contacts'? Family? Co-workers? Other ppl at the grocery store? 'Public health experts say contact tracing systems should be in place before cases become widespread, so every new infection can be tracked and the person’s contacts identified, tested and isolated'

_Christina Good because we arent China a communist country

_Christina Fck your tracking

_Christina How hard is it? It ain’t rocket science. These “positives” folk aren’t talking or what? People are strange.

_Christina You do contact tracing at the beginning of a pandemic to control the spread. You don’t do it 3-6 months after the virus has spread across the country. By that time it is too late. fuckingmorons

_Christina Are you complaining ppl want privacy?

_Christina But the IRS doesn't have a problem finding you if you owe taxes.

_Christina Don’t get tested

_Christina I don't get it can we not train the millions of people who have recently lost their jobs to fill the demand? 🤷‍♂️

_Christina Tracing is a no go.

_Christina With NO budgets, NO current software, NO method & protocol provided to expand the process: many of these departments have turned to volunteers and/or reallocated city/state staff. SADLY will take another short sided crisis response to happen for our President to take any action.

_Christina Yea you idiots, we don’t want to be tracked by the government. Duh

_Christina Hey..... look on the 'bright side' liberals.... more government or government supported jobs..... our tax dollars put to use.... Obama plan for reduction in unemployment.... create more government jobs supported by tax dollars....

_Christina Contact tracing doesn’t even seem feasible. What if someone goes to Walmart, gets sick and can’t remember what day they went? How are you going to find everyone who might have been there in the last week?

_Christina Sorry guys, this one is already out of the barn. How many cases do we have, over one million? Lesson in futility at this stage, assume everyone has or will be exposed, focus on safeguarding high risk people, and figuring out how to rescue the economy.

_Christina Unless each states can monitor and track infected people & contacts efficiently like S. Korea, it's really pointless to do all these testings.

_Christina Good!

_Christina Somebody paid you to write this. No American citizens want to be tracked. Start with your family first.

_Christina Why not just tell them when they test positive that they should tell everyone they've been in contact with for the last two weeks? Tell everybody to keep a diary ahead of time. Simple.

_Christina Well, we have a large number of people who need a job about now. Hire away!

_Christina This is a huge opportunity to employ out-of-work people. What’s lacking in the process?

_Christina And that’s a good thing.

_Christina Who cares? Contact tracing is a stupid idea that is not going to work in the US.
