CEBU CITY – A team from the Department of Health-Eastern Visayas (DOH-8) completed a three-day proficiency training at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and the DOH-7 laboratory in preparation for the opening of a molecular coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) laboratory that has been setup at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC), which is just awaiting the accreditation of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).

The Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Lloyd Dino facilitated the trip of the 10 medical personnel, composed of a pathologist and nine medical technologists, from Ormoc City to Mandaue City, and arranged for their accommodation and transportation for the duration of the training here.

Dino said the molecular laboratory in Region 8 was set up at the old EVRMC, and has passed Stage 2 of the validation stage in the laboratory accreditation steps of the RITM. The COVID-19 Proficiency Training of the personnel was the third stage.Once validated by the RITM, Stage 5 or the full-scale implementation will be granted.

The team, headed by Dr. Kae Parilla, went back to Tacloban City Wednesday after they completed the training. According to Dino, in order to augment the testing capacity of the EVRMC COVID-19 laboratory, the Cristina Lee Dino Foundation, through OPAV, donated a Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction machine, a desktop computer set, and additional 1,000 swab kits.

The PCR testing of samples from Region 8 are currently being undertaken at the VSMMC. But once RITM accredits EVRMC, it will now be running its own PCR testing for the entire region.
