People prone to depression are now under particular stress, and mental health experts are advising them to stay active and find diversions.

At a time of government guidelines on minimising close contact with others, depressed people can find it helpful to frequently stay in touch with family and friends over the phone or online, says the German Foundation for Research and Education on Depression.

They shouldn't talk only about the virus, though, the foundation says, adding that exercise is also important – preferably outdoors, if possible. Although measures taken to counter the pandemic have disrupted people's routines, it's not a good idea for depressives to sleep more than usual or remain longer in bed.

This will only increase their fatigue and the severity of their condition. Structuring their time with detailed daily and weekly plans can be beneficial, according to the foundation. To manage worry or boredom while cooped up at home, Britain's National Health Service suggests activities such as cooking, reading, online learning and watching films. – dpa
