Here's what public-health officials say about the process of lifting social-distancing restrictions

A stay-at-home message in San Diego, California. Photo: Aydin Palabiyikoglu/Getty Images Since the coronavirus outbreak began in the U.S., 316 million Americans in more than 40 states across the country have been ordered to stay at home, except for essential activities, to help slow the spread of coronavirus. Although the restrictions are extremely disruptive to daily life, public-health experts say they’ve been effective in reducing the rate of infection and ultimately saving lives.

What are the federal guidelines? Since the coronavirus outbreak began, President Trump’s predictions for when the economy could reopen have been wildly inconsistent, with him initially saying that he wanted to reopen businesses by Easter. Last week, he told governors that they could begin reopening businesses and other aspects of daily life in three gradual phases as soon as May 1 or earlier, if they were in “very good shape.

Which states are lifting their orders? According to Politico, around one-third of states plan to lift their orders on April 30 or May 1. Some states, however, have made the decision to reopen some businesses even earlier. Which states have extended them? In the past few weeks, more than a dozen states have extended their stay-at-home orders until at least early May, if not later. New Hampshire, Minnesota, and Washington have extended orders through May 4; Pennsylvania and Rhode Island through May 8; Delaware, New York, Vermont, and Washington, D.C., through May 15; and Connecticut through May 20. Virginia’s stay-at-home order is set to last until June 10.
