Dr Tony Holohan: 'It's not realistic for us to think that we could keep this entirely out of nursing homes'

Image: Sam Boal Image: Sam Boal CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER Dr Tony Holohan has said that it “wouldn’t make sense” to have had a strategy to completely prevent the spread of Covid-19 into nursing homes, based on the infection rate of the virus.

“This is a very transmissible virus,” Dr Holohan said this evening. “It’s more transmissible than the flu. It’s not realistic for us to think that we could keep this entirely out of nursing homes when we consider that fact.” McLellan said that they had begun to carry out a census over the weekend in LTRC centres. This includes mental health settings, intellectual disabilities and special services.

Responding to this criticism, McLellan said that there had been some “confusion” as to what the group was meant to do.

They were obviously the first who would be infected. But irelands true relationship with the elderly and vulnerable shown agaín. 😕

It's reported that almost half of all deaths across European countries are from nursing homes, people of my age group!!!

1st C19 poss clients needed to be immediately moved to hospitals once symptoms? NH didn’t have facility to isolate or only have C19 & non-C19 staff, as per protocol in hospitals. Clients had a care plan in place not to be moved isnt an excuse. That’s re gen health issues not C19

Half of all deaths in europemare thought to be in nursing homes, you can’t stop a virus once it gets into a confined space like a nursing home

Realistic is the Horrific past state the senior homes were in before the virus came

All you need to know about this man is here!

NO ONE SAID YOU COULD BUT BY NOT SUPPLYING TESTING,PPE, EXTRA STAFF/RESOURCES/PROCEDURES TO NURSE RESIDENTS WITH COVID IN ISOLATION, BLOCKING RESIDENTS FROM HOSPITALISTION,NO BASICS SUCH AS O2 FOR PALLIATIVE CARE YOU ENSURED IT'S SPREAD AND DEATHS!

An estimated R0 of 4-5 suggests once this virus was seeded in European capitals, we were going to have a major crisis in Europe. I’ve been pretty critical of our government but in the context of 4-5 R0, they’ve done well.

Perhaps it’s just that those in nursing homes were the highest risk category and therefore most likely to have a higher percentage of deaths ?

obviously CMOIreland but you could have put as much effort into preparing the care homes and staff for the onslaught. compare Hospitals and Staff and resources vs Care homes, staff and resources it’s plain to see Care homes would struggle on all fronts CoronavirusIreland

One would imagine a health care nursing home would be one of the safest places to be in such a crisis? but that's the cost of brown envelopes.

Last Friday night, on National TV, 'Late Late Show' , he stated rate 1, now its's 2.4 or 4-5, or 'whatever you are having yourself?' Any journalists left?, capable of questioning 'stats'?

People please please stay at home and follow HSE guidelines ... the last few weeks seems to normalise the daily reports of cases and deaths but believe me you do not want to find yourself in ICU or hospital we are still battling this virus.

This Doctor knows -

What did you actually do! Sent a memo, or a checklist? Criticised nursing homes for lockdown at the beginning of March. You called it 'draconian' and then the HSE took all their PPE. You didn't do anything practical to prevent it getting into homes.

We didn't want it to be kept out entirely, but it infected hundreds of them!

What's not realistic is to think you can keep 5 million people at home while you figure it out !!!

Wishful thinking put these nursing homes and their at the current risk level

The problem is with management, not the HSE

No but it would've been acceptable to try to provide enough resources to tackle this at identified weak points including nursing homes from the beginning. There was an altogether broad rollout of gear which should have been prioritised for susceptible areas of the health sector

'entirely out' does not mean 'let run rampant'
