It is premature to say Britain has reached the peak of its coronavirus outbreak but there are signs of improvement, a top health official said on Sunday.

“It’s not fair to say we are past the peak but I do think things are looking to be heading in the right direction,” England’s deputy chief medical officer Jenny Harries told reporters.

She added that people should not jump to positive conclusions based on Sunday’s death toll, which showed the smallest increase in almost two weeks, as the figures issued over weekends often show a drop in fatalities.
